The Kepler telescope studied just 155,000 stars in one small slice of the night sky. Even so, it detected over 1,000 planets that passed directly in front of (and temporarily dimmed) their host stars. Our galaxy is home to 200 to 400 billion stars—and, as Kepler demonstrated, billions of planets as well.
