See all Show me
Winter can be so still and quiet! Had some time to kill the other day so I shot this video, what struck me most was the stillness of the afternoon. I went back to Pt. AuRoche State Park in Upstate New York to shoot this. Same location as my Winter Solstice piece, but the same place can sure look different depending on the light.

I also finally got Magic Bullet Looks. Used it to add the vignette and to color correct these shots. Used it even more toward the end to add the soft warm glow to the footage. It's a powerful tool but I see it overused alot. I'll try not to do that even though it is quite fun to play around with the look of your footage. To me it's all about enhancing the mood you are trying to convey.

Music is by Bill Douglas "Earth Prayer" from Hearts of Space records.

Stay warm! Spring is coming....so they say!

I am glad to see another beautiful work from you,
but overall, I prefer your "Winter Solstice".
I really loved the shot from 01:10 in this one, though.

wow. crystal sharp quality and nice music. shot with the ex1? i gotta get that camera :)
  • Paul Frederick 10 months ago
Yup EX1 and Letus adapter. That makes it softer but more film like. Without it the footage is tack sharp!

I've put a "like" on it here but I watched it on XP at the sorrect frame rate.

I bet it took you a lot longer to edit it than shoot it! Nice one.

Beautiful compositions! I'm impressed with you pans, so smooth!
  • Paul Frederick 9 months ago
Two factors help smooth out pans, a good fluid head tripod and a heavy camera, which with the Letus adapter and lenses added on is no prob! It weighs about 18lbs.

This is superb! Oh how I wish we had snow! It's so beautiful.
  • Paul Frederick 9 months ago
Thanks Tracy, I must agree with you that snow can be quite beautiful. Even though up here where I live, winter is about 2 months too long. I would miss the changing seasons if they went away however! Isn't that the beauty of VIMEO? We all get to see and enjoy such varied landscapes and seasons. I enjoy the Outback when I watch yours!

we have some of the same interests in the still of winter. its an understatement, but nice piece here.
  • Paul Frederick 8 months ago
Thanks Dave, Winter has it's place to be sure! More of a stark, black and white view of the world during Winter. A bit more challenging to get compelling images but beautiful time of year for sure!

That shot of those tree roots is amazing and I love the subtle use of Magic Bullet
