“Nurdle” by definition is “a cylindrical pre-production plastic pellet.”
They are melted down and used to create most plastic goods. Over 250 billion pounds of nurdles are manufactured and shipped globally every year.
Nurdles are considered to be one of the leading ocean polluters. They are found on virtually every beach and have been found floating throughout most parts of the ocean. It is estimated that 1 in 10 manufactured nurdles end up in the ocean. Nurdles are tiny and are lost into the environment during the plastic production and transportation process. According to the United Nations, for every square mile of ocean about 13,000 bits of plastic are floating around.
A hand full of these plastic pellets were collected on the shores of California to create the piece of adornment titled “Perpetual.”
