April 7, 2011 -- We'd been filming in the recording studio with MarchFourth earlier in the day developing some "behind-the-scenes" material for their upcoming record. Later that evening, M4 would perform at the Crystal Ballroom on a bill with none other than the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band, from New Orleans. We just had to be there...
MarchFourth managed a coup in the dressing room backstage: record producer Steve Berlin had brought along a mobile recording device hoping to enlist some of PHJB to play on one of the new studio tracks. Impromptu solo performances ensued on "Rose City Strut", a big band jazzy number on M4's soon to be released album, Magnificent Beast. Suffice to say, the clarinet playing on Rose really brings the song to life!
Here are some nice shots of Charlie Gabriel and the rest of the incredible Preservation Hall Jazz Band laying down some serious swing on Hank Snow's "A Good Gal is Hard to Find" during their performance later that evening.
