The Guide.
This artwork consists of a series of piles of leaves that physically move in the flow of a breath. Sculpture exist in city outdoor settings and during the Autumn time of year, it is temporarily placed in each for any period from a few hours to a few weeks.
The images below show the initial installation during 2008 in New York City*.
The first presentation of the work shows each separate leaf pile filmed, as individually screened in its loop. It is aimed that this work be shown in the corridor of a Public Building that functions as a Cross roads between Government and the City's Inhabitance.
The second presentation is the building of an on going document, that records and shows the artwork in every location and incarnation it moves through in its existence. Stitching each time it is exhibited together to form one unending film, documenting the relationship between the environment, people and the artwork.
The Guide exists within a specific framework, which is outlined in a manual. This explains how and when the Guide is shown and recorded throughout its exhibition lifetime. These instructions serve to form a very specific and simple outline, that give a perpetuating structure for the work to live within. In the actual viewing of the work it is aimed that the work is seen by both the accidental viewer and the person who seeks it out. The first document of the work looks for the accidental viewer. The second document of the work (where it is a single continuing film), looks for the person who wants to visit the work specifically.
The Guide is part of an ongoing Public Artwork Series made for NYC and about NYC.
