ghost in a shell is considered the inspiration for the matrix, seeing how it mimics a lot of what made ghost in a shell, ghost in a shell.
  • Beekeeper plus 4 months ago
Yes, very true even i read that somewhere.

If people are going to quote please don't claim it as your own at least take the time to place the persons name next to it as it is annoying when people try to act original and their like, well? like this video clip, everything is a remix or ripped off from the past. But I do like the video on this page.

I can't say I'm surprised about those fight scenes. I believe Yuen Wo-Ping choreographed a lot of the originals and recycled himself for his work on The Matrix.

Geoff Darrow was a concept artist on Matrix, so the similarities to Hard Boiled come naturally.

even this video is a remix of other videos that show the same thing (how other videos copied others SO ON AND SO FORTH) so I don't really understand why the need to upload something like that here

I was of the opinion that I should seek out the influences that the Wachowski Brothers drew from. While certainly there are comparisons to be made, if a film was released in the couple years prior or following the release of the Matrix, it was hard to argue that it was a DIRECT influence on the film, due to filmmaking production schedules. At the end of the 90's there was a heavy leaning on cyberpunk thrillers, and while it may have had an influence on the film being greenlit, it found it hard to imagine that the Wachowski brothers literally took their images from Dark City. See also: Blade, The Thirteenth Floor, The Truman Show, etc. This is why there is no mention of these films in our video.

    Good point though!

Nothing new here: Once Upon a Time in the West is, in my opinion, the greatest western ever made. And it's entirely a remix of older masterpieces.

  •

    Nice work.

Also, the interrogation scene, where Keanu's mouth melts shut, is taken from "Un Chien Andalou" by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí.

  •
  • artus 4 months ago
Nothing special - this way you can prove that every movie has similar scenes as many other. There are plenty of Chinese movies where flying soldiers fight - this is their way of showing great warriors. Would you say they copy from each other?
  •
  • Dimitris Kapakoulakis 4 months ago
"Simulacra and simulation" by Baudrillard gets a nod in the movie, since it's the book in which Neo hides the bootleg programs he's selling just before going to the nightclub where he meets Trinity for the first time.

A bit too many of the examples were overkill - the shootout in the Killer is very different from the one in The Matrix for example. Some things the Matrix "copied" are actually just different takes on some basic unavoidable concept, like the computer linkup chair from Total Recall(also quite different). Ghost in the Shell, however - keep it all. And PKD. So much scifi would be impossible without him.

  • Rian McNamara 4 months ago
Fantastic job on the video, but just adding my two cents - there are many similarities between the Matrix and Fist of Legend/Drunken Master, etc because of the fact that the Wachowski's were a huge fan of Asian cinema (which proves their part of the remix...). So big was that influence that they actually brought the famed Yeun Woo Ping on board as the fight choreographer for the Matrix. He also did the same fights referenced from Fist of Legend/Drunken Master/Iron Monkey...so I guess my point is, is it really a remix if Woo Ping is referencing his own work for a new audience? Its not the Wachowski's referencing and repurposing his work, but rather the original fight director re-hashing his existing work...is that still a remix?
  • Nillerus 4 months ago
My point exactly. Not to mention Alice in Wonderland. Direct reference does not a remix make.
  • 410 Garfield Films 4 months ago
Yes. Completely agree with Nillerus. So the point here is what? Stolen? Or influenced? Does it matter? Or is there such a thing as complete original thought? This is better left in the hands of philosophers. The augment of Chirmera... not new but only a compilation of what we can observe? In either case, "The Matrix" done very well, stands on its own as enjoyable film fair.

  • Nicolas Plaire plus 4 months ago
It's a remix of the original "Everything is a Remix"?
  •
  • Peter 4 months ago
The whole Kung Fu bullet stopping thing is from an episode of the seventies tv series "The New Avengers", I think it's this one: imdb.com/title/tt0659326/.

It's been ages since I have seen it, but it not only features some asian guy trying to take over the world with "gladiators" he trained to be able to stop bullets with kung fu moves. It also features a central mainframe computer (located in an embassy in Canada), and I remember the shot of one of the twin's arms in the door with the gun from "Reloaded" being in there.
  •
  • Andy Barbieri plus 4 months ago
I guess you could say that the Wachowski's Matrix is a 'homage' to Asian and Sci-Fi cinema! Good video!

  • Article19 plus 4 months ago
so a film using martial arts movements feature some of the same martial arts movements? that's quite an impressive waste of time dude and it only took three of you to make it.
  •
  • Nillerus 4 months ago
Very well made! But I do have to say that half of the films listed are quite explicit influences on the Matrix, so... what's the point of this? Alice in Wonderland? Come on. This is an awesome vid, if just missing the point a bit. Explicit is explicit.
  •
  • qendorf plus 4 months ago
Unnecessary video. No remix, only inspiration and some similar pieces scene. In Transformers 3 is some scenes totaly exactly a same like a previous movie. This is a different thing

  •
  • klemenjero 4 months ago
i really get what you mean. everything that we create is a remix of some components. but now i am wondering. what are the first ingredients of creativity. what is the first creation? is it nature?

  •
  • Paul 4 months ago
Fascinating. I'd been aware of the Ghost in the Shell similarities as I am a great fan of the film as well as the Phillip K. Dick's connection, being, again, a fan of his work, however not being familiar with Asian cinema, this has really been an eye opening experience. Thank you :)

    Awesome video!,
With the way how cinema is now I days, it doesn't surprise that scene stealing happens. The cool thing about this is that now I have some more movies to had to my list.

Calling this stealing is a very limited perspective.

Perhaps the most incomplete of the EIAR videos, but still well worth watching. The one brief addition would be one of the mentions of implanted, false memories from Blade Runner.

If you ever plan on doing the sequels, there is an episode of Eerie Indiana called "The Lost Hour" where Marshall gets pulled into a parallel dimension (kinda like the place Neo gets pulled into the beginning of Revolutions) and the milkman (who resembles the Train Man) even pulls up his sleeve to reveal his arm covered in wristwatches.

Baudrillard has been paraphrased (and possibly quoted) to have said that any comparisons between his work and The Matrix are the product of misreadings of his work.

Nice, though this seemed to mostly touch on stylistic influences. The allegorical connections to the allegory of the cave seem like they ultimately have more weight in terms of nearly subconscious shared ideas that we often confuse with originality. The Matrix was made during the dot-com bubble of reality and used the same set as Dark City... and ultimately a half dozen movies of this same theme were released within the last year of the millennium. What that says about society in a sort of Jungian shared consciousness way (as referenced in your other video) seems more interesting to me than reviewing typical stylistic influences. Just to list some of the common films in the sort of brain in a vat, reality is not what it seems, canon:

    Ghost in the Shell
Abre Los Ojos / Vanilla Sky
    The Truman Show
    Dark City
    The Matrix
    Existenz
    The Thirteenth Floor
    Avalon
    Inception
    Tron
    Adjustment Bureau

More listed at: simulism.org/Movies and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulated_reality_in_fiction#Film

Sorry, by "as referenced in your other video" I was referring to Kirby Ferguson's videos. Now this gets confusing :)

    ofcourse everything is a remix.
everything is a remix of a remixof a remix of a remix.

Fist of Legend is a remake of Fist of Fury, and I cant believe you put a remake on your list of the original inspirations.
The most unforgivable thing though, is that you showed Jet Lee doing the palm thing on 0:33 instead of Bruce Lee. C'mon!!! Everyone knows that's Bruce's signature gesture. C'mon!!!

Basically you're saying the Matrix was influenced by Kung Fu and Gunfights. Those specific movies just also have those.

Of course you were spot on with Philip K Dick and Ghost in the Shell, but doesn't everyone know those already?

Surprised no Dark City here though, that's the one everyone always goes on about.

Wish you'd do one on Steven Prince's adrenalin-needle-to-the-heart story from Martin Scorsese's "American Boy", and then compare it to Tarantino's adrenalin-needle-to-the-heart scene in Pulp Fiction.

    Hmmmm.

The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence of a video that is without meaning or purpose.

Apropos, review the films from the imdb pages of Shun-Yee Yuen & Woo-ping Yuen.

Concordantly, while your first video may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant.

Which brings us at last to the moment of truth, wherein the fundamental flaw is ultimately expressed and the anomaly revealed. Vis-à-vis... Why do you think this film and its influences are different from any other ever made?

Read Issac Newton, there's the door... you know the rest :)

Cool video, very good job. Actually, I think Matrix was mainly influenced by Ghost In The Shell and other Oshii's early works. But, from the perspective of a Chinese, the part of martial arts is not just a kind of mimicing in my opinion, in fact, that's how they fight. I would rather to say -the fight really follows the tradition but not only just mimicing.
