Wow the compression on this looks like shit.

haha don't worry about it! it's what's inside that counts
  • Ian Lucero 10 months ago
Thanks man. It's just that I spent 4 days trying to figure out new compression settings because I shot all this on my new Canon SD1000. I tried my usual Vimeo preset that I would normally use with my DVX but that looked like crap for some reason.

Must be the camera itself. Oh! and that there was lots of moving around. And the camera ain't hi-res.

hhahaha! yeah. it's so weird how the people in that kind of crowd look almost like they're on the verge of tippy-toeing.

Kinda reminded me of Les Triplettes de Belleville, where they show the "american" family in the city.

this was rad! i feel like i went to the pearl festival with you. thanks!

tell me. how do you like your new canon sd1000? i just bought one two weeks ago and i totally love it.

i hate to dig into you like this, but i have the same compression problems. i use windows movie maker to edit. wmm saves the file into a .wmv format, which turns out ok, but it takes SOooo long to save the file.

i'm looking to find another imaging program that is able to compress nicely in a timely manner. got any ideas?

    Loonachic,

i am really liking the sd1000. I got it about 2 weeks ago as well. I remember reading a post of yours in the forums about you getting one for your birthday. I really like the size of it and picture quality and that it takes pretty alright video.

I got one because I found that every time I would go to visit my family in Hawai'i I would always end up borrowing my mom's SD600. I liked using it so much that I decided to just get one. I don't regret getting it. I love that I don't have to bring my bigger DVX around or use my Nikon Coolpix 4500 (i'll use that for photos but it takes really horrible video). Now I have a really convenient and very tiny video camera that I can be really stealthy with.

Like I said it takes pretty good video and the photos are pretty damn nice. The last 3 sets in this collection on flickr was shot using the sd1000. (http://flickr.com/photos/ianlucero/collections/72157601921203187/)

As far as your compression question - I have no idea what to use on the PC side to do fast compression. You could give Quicktime Pro a shot but it'll cost you $30. Compressing to h.264 churns out pretty nice results but can take a while to do.

    Ian,

woah...that must've taken a long time to put together. SO much going on...too much fun stuff!!!

It left me with many questions:
Why do I love backwards footage so much?
Why does bagpipe music sound the same forward as backward?
Why do those belly dancers have so much belly?

Great job, you really gave us all the feel of what this festival was like...plus that music! Again, too much fun!

    Eric,

Thanks! It took quite a bit of time to put together. I had to organize the still photos and name some files. That took a bit of time. Then I dedicated an afternoon to putting it all together. The part that took really long was compressing.

Cool video. I almost never watch stuff this long on the web, but you had me... I had to see how things turned out and it was a great trip.

I find that whenever I do sped up stuff the compression looks bad. Lots of movement doesn't do well with keyframes and compression. I'm also looking for a solution, so let me know if you find some good settings.
  • Ian Lucero 10 months ago
I find if you use a higher shutter speed you can get better results in the compression. But this only works if you have a camera in which you can tweak shutter speed settings. The SD1000 has a video setting for hi-speed stuff. I haven't used it much but I can imagine it will yield some nice smooth slow-mo stuff BUT only at 320x240! So the resolution is gonna look pretty crummy.

Thanks for watching the whole video. It is pretty long but I tried to keep it interesting.

The hurdy gurdy part was weird. I wonder if those are the belly dancers who have a studio in the Hollywood district.
  • Ian Lucero 10 months ago
    Hurdy Gurdys are weird instruments.

I have no diea where those bellies are from.

I got a pineapple for you.

last 2 minutes = sweet scion commercial.

    whole thing = sweet film-making
  • Ian Lucero 10 months ago
    wow! hey J thanks.

The scion is such a sweet little car that carries so much.
  • jchap (Jeremy Chapman) 10 months ago
wow, now that i look at it again, i realize it was not 2 minutes, but, in fact, exactly 8 seconds.

i think time-lapse has a way of seeming like longer than it actually was.

  • reminds me a bit of man with a movie camera.

those reverse shots are so fucking funny.
  • Ian Lucero 10 months ago
arg i haven't seen that movie yet. I've been meaning to see it.

yeah those people at that pace going in reverse. Priceless. I didn't slow any of that stuff down. Everyone naturally looks tippy toe-e.

i love all the music in this. who is that at the end? and who sings the hurdy gurdy song? great editing. i'm inspired to carry an armful of lavender around town.
  • Ian Lucero 9 months ago
Hurdy Gurdy Man is by Donovan who is also best known for Mellow Yellow.

The end? you mean the scat singer? Why it's none other than Shooby Taylor (The Human Horn)

  • oh my god wow.
