    Ben,
It was shot nice, no question, edit, everything all top notch. But I feel we have all got to the ability to create pretty pictures and now we need to move on to good storytelling whether docu, narrative or a music piece. My belief if this piece would be amazing with a strong beautifully recorded OCN that helps the viewer through the vague story. The mans thoughts. Much like the Dark Side of the Lens. Otherwise, I would cut the length in 1/2. To me, it's to long for a silent film, especially on the web. I also would like to hear what a wonderful sound design of foley and real sound efx would do to the piece. Might work, might not work.

Bottom line. Beautifully piece but with a tiny bit of work I think it could be much more powerful.

    Steve,
I don´t think this video was made for people with an attention span no longer than 30 seconds. How can you think 8 minutes is too long for such story? There are hundreds, if not thousands of people from Africa and the Middle-East who are waiting and trying for years to cross
from France to the UK to reunite with their families! I don´t think there is any need for some voice-over
  • Steve Weiss plus 4 weeks ago
Julius, I'm not making any political statements whatsoever. I feel for the plight of the people from Africa who want to immigrate. My evaluation is strictly that of how this piece works as a film. I feel you will capture a much larger audience and tell your compelling message if you make your story more understandable. The question is not that people have a 30 second attention span, it's whether you grab them as a story teller and have such a compelling story that they could sit and watch for an hour on their computer. It can be done on the web. My comments were aimed towards that end.
  • Julius Kleipool 3 weeks ago
Steve, Thanks for your comment. I guess I understand what you mean. For someone who has no clue about this topic it won't be understandable But the only thing I am saying is that not every video material needs explanation. The images say a lot, so does the music, why add a voice over or text?
  • Steve Weiss plus 3 weeks ago
In your case you have to have an explanation ONLY because you are specifically trying to get me to understand a cause. If you want to give me some beautiful images and music, that's great and I can enjoy that for about 3 minutes and except it for what it is. But I know you are trying to do more then that and that which requires a story to be told. Don't be scared of an OCN, it can be wonderful poetic text that someone is reading. It could be the thoughts of your main character, it could evoke so much emotion that your viewers will cry. I love you images and I want to be moved. Please move me. Please watch Dark Side of the Lens and let me know what you think?
  • Julius Kleipool 3 weeks ago
I am not scared of an OCN, and I know it can be beautiful. In fact, I am a big fan of Dark side of the lens. The full movie 'Live of artist' (80 min. docu online available on relentlessenergy.com) is incredible as well. But such videos need explanations and poetic words. I have seen tons of surf videos, and I know if Dark side of the lens didn't have this additional inofmration and voices it would just be like any other surf movie; some sealife shots, high waves, sun going down etc edited on a cool song. There is no story in that!! but in this video there is...and it's a good one. (by the way, I am not the one who made this video, just someone who likes it very much :)
  • Steve Weiss plus 3 weeks ago
I dig what you are saying Julius, that's cool. I didn't get the story and because of that I lost interest. You lost me as a viewer and that's bad. So after a while I felt it was too long with the "lite story" and I moved on. Trust me, incredibly poetic OCN and this will have 500K views.
  • Julius Kleipool 3 weeks ago
:) thanks man! My 500k has yet to come...cheers and all the best

I thought it was beautifully shot, but did lose a bit of interest because I had no idea of what the guy was trying to accomplish. Like steve said not familiar with the reuniting.

    Congrats to the Cinematography!

Hi Ben absolutely great film, directed, shot and acted with understated profoundness. . To me it is reminiscent of the French film '35 Shots of Rum' Dir Claire Denis . . one I highly recommend. Btw I'm very good friends with the lead singer of the band and think you've interpreted their powerful music perfectly.

Incredible and inspirational Cinematography, can only hope my work is this beautiful in the future. Great short, didn't patronise the viewer. And I don't think it would of worked any other way than its been presented, despite what some have said. Never underestimate what beautiful shots, greatly paced edit, and wonderful character building can do for a narrative.
