a good story, well told; I did get a sense of the mood. Very nice cut toward the end - from behind the marcher moving through the crowd to the pin strip suit moving near Wall Street.

Cool vid, but the actual "protest" needs to be more clear..“I hate the government so they need more power to take care of me” doesn’t work. “Big banks are evil so they need to give me a free house and take care of my student loans” doesn’t work. AND, “I want a job so I’m going to stand out here for a few weeks rather than actually looking for a job,” also doesn’t work.
  • Gena Mimozo 4 months ago
I've been down at the park any free chance I get (I do have jobs and loans/bills to pay) and in my opinion I don't think those are any of the messages of the protesters. They don't hate the government. They are just aware of the fact that the government has failed them. And no one is asking for free houses or free anything for that matter. They are just questioning why big banks got bailed out and the american people didn't. Also, most of the folks I've spoken to have been looking for work for months and some for even years.
We aren't complaining. We are asking questions and demanding answers. We don't have solutions but everyone protesting sure does want to be a part of coming up with the solutions so that it works for EVERYONE, not just the 1%.
Now don't get me wrong, all protests get their crazy people, which is who you see pushed to the front thanks to mainstream media, but for the most part all the people involved are pretty educated and fed up with whats been going on in our country. The occupiers are working things out, a clear vision, goals, etc. And that's okay. This is just the beginning and things are just starting :)
  • Mark Hafley 4 months ago
Jon has it right. What is stunning about this video, national media, and the political conversation is that NO ONE seems to be interested in WHY is the middle class shrinking. How could you possibly make the middle class prosperous without a robust examination of the problem? And, no, it's not the 1%.
  • Crown Vap 4 months ago
    Oh, so funny...

"They are just questioning why big banks got bailed out and the american people didn't. "

Because if the banks fail you will end up on the street, sleeping rough and cooking rats over old rags set on fire in a barrel, no matter where you worked or what was your business.

While you gnaw at the banks' doors the governments are happy as they know that in fact they are the ones mostly responsible for the crisis. But their conscience is clear because you, who protest now, did not protest when the government encouraged the banks to lend you more than you could ever repay. You did not protest, but took the money. Now all of us have to pay these moneys back.
  • Julian Cicone plus 4 months ago
Jon, Mark, and Crown, none of you have a single god damn clue what you are talking about. It's amazing because I usually hear these kinds of comments on youtube. I expected more bright, intelligent, and open minded people

Jon, you clearly have not checked out the Occupy Protests at all, if you did you would realize that most of the protestors actually are employed and do have jobs. You would realize that the movement consists of attacking government and attacking Wall Street and our Corporatist system that we have had. You would realize that the movement consists of liberals, political independents, socialists, conservatives, anarchists, and libertarians. Religious beliefs vary as well including, but not limited to, Christians, Jews, Muslims and atheists.

There are small business owners in the movement, teachers, employees, students, and even former and current Wall Street brokers who want reform in our country and financial sector.

Mark we know why the middle class is shrinking and it is the 1%. Look at our history in the United States and how the gap has increased over year over the last 30 to 40 years.

Crown, you annoy me the most with your first comment being "oh, so funny....."

Yes it is so funny that you don't have a single clue what you are talking about. The only reason why our government is responsible also for the crisis is because they were the ones who pushed for deregulation of the Financial sector and allowed Wall Street and the Banks to do whatever they wanted. And since this movement attacks both government and Corporations I don't know why you are even on here opposing it. The government has been involved in our new Corporatist system and have been aiding Corporations and the financial sector because our government and politicians are now being bought out by the Financial sector and big business while the rest of the country has very little say.

And the banks don't create anything of value so we didn't need to bail them out. We needed to bail out main street and allowed the banks to fail like we have allowed so many in the past to fail before it. Banks can fail like they always have. We didn't need to bail them out, and they were bailed out with our tax dollars and they were the ones who screwed us over. It is mostly Wall Street and our financial sector that caused the crisis and the politicians that supported giving them unlimited power.

I'm with Julian. Jon, Mark, and Crown are TOTALLY CLUELESS. You're lucky it's the internet. I'm very embarrassed for you with views like that.
  • Crown Vap 4 months ago
While people are so misguided they are so easily manipulated... You use words banks, crisis, financial sector, regulation but you really have no clue what they mean.

If you'd just tried to think about these things with your head instead of meekly accepting the propaganda, the world would have been a better place...
  • Matthew Bowersox 4 months ago
Has there been any "List of Demands" written up by these protesters? I understand the whole 99% concept, but it seems to me (and I believe many conservatives) that they have unfocused goals. Are they simply trying to draw attention to the situation?
  • Imitsu Media plus 4 months ago
Crown Vap has quite a tendentious view of history.

"If you'd just tried to think about these things with your head instead of meekly accepting the propaganda, the world would have been a better place..."

Yes, thinking with your head can be a very good thing, however, in my opinion, your statements above and below are a bit lopsided.

"But their conscience is clear because you, who protest now, did not protest when the government encouraged the banks to lend you more than you could ever repay. You did not protest, but took the money."

A percentage of the protesters might possibly be fallout from the predatory lending nightmare, e.g. Countrywide, but the majority? Do you have any real statistics to back up this statement or is it merely a dicto simpliciter? Moreover, should the burden of responsibility not also be shared by those creditors who engaged in nefarious practices?

Here is some well researched information on the roots of this crisis:

    Who's behind the financial meltdown?
    (tinyurl.com/cjmbvx)

The Wages of Failure: Executive Compensation at Bear Stearns and Lehman 2000-2008
    (tinyurl.com/3e6khha)

Sweeping generalizations and ad hominem attacks preclude you from any sort of logical debate.
  • Crown Vap 4 months ago
Well, Imitsu Media, you make excellent points. Which just happen to confirm what I was saying - the governments knew, the regulators knew, the banks were encouraged to do this tacitly or openly. Then, when the penny dropped, the governments have used the banks as shields, deflecting the blame and baiting the naive. And all the protesters can come up with is to call for governments to have even more power!

How can you seriously complain about "corporativism" and ask for more regulation in one breath? Only large corporations can afford to employ armies of compliance staff to deal with it.

Not to bail out banks? Did any one of these protesters stop and think what would have happened to them personally if the banks collapsed?

Oh, no. They are seduced by the nonsense about derivatives market being the cause of all evil because it's easier to imagine a fat banker with a cigar from the Soviet posters of 1920s than to try to use one's brain to see if your are not being shamelessly misled.

And, no, I don't do ad hominem attacks. At least, I don't consider asking someone to think as a personal affront...
  • Patrick McLoad pro 3 months ago
I agree that the protesters (aka LOSERS) are at the wrong site and their target is misguided....they need to be both at Obama's doorstep as well as Barney Franks.

"The roots of this crisis go back to the Carter administration. That was when government officials, egged on by left-wing activists, began accusing mortgage lenders of racism and "redlining" because urban blacks were being denied mortgages at a higher rate than suburban whites.

The pressure to make more loans to minorities (read: to borrowers with weak credit histories) became relentless. Congress passed the Community Reinvestment Act, empowering regulators to punish banks that failed to "meet the credit needs" of "low-income, minority, and distressed neighborhoods." Lenders responded by loosening their underwriting standards and making increasingly shoddy loans. The two government-chartered mortgage finance firms, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, encouraged this "subprime" lending by authorizing ever more "flexible" criteria by which high-risk borrowers could be qualified for home loans, and then buying up the questionable mortgages that ensued."

    tinyurl.com/3hjgf3

Liberal Democrats F**** things up once again, and are now crying like babies because the govt. isn't sending them checks.....how's that "change" working out for you guys? How about taking a bit of responsibility for your own life rather than expecting a free lunch from the government?

Im a 53%! Quit your bitching and stop looking for a government handout! This is an attempt to undermine capitalism. Capitalism works and socialism doesn't. Then next thing you'll tell me is we need one religion for people!
  • Julian Cicone plus 4 months ago
Wow, more of this crap. Please why the hell are you on Vimeo Marty? Go to youtube with all the other ignorant children and spew this crap. THis movement has never been anti-capitalist, it has never been a Socialist movement, and no one is looking for a hand out. Again you are just being the little sheep that you are by attacking the movement and buying into whatever garbage Fox News tells you.

Here's a little truth of people who are in the movement.

"To say that the demonstrators are only hippies and radicals pining for 1968 would be a gross misstatement. Rather, the demonstrators come from diverse backgrounds: environmentalists, feminists, former and current Wall Street bankers, traders and brokers, Small business owners, anarchists, socialists, members of the LGBTQ community, teachers, students, Liberals, Conservatives Republicans, Democrats, libertarians, people of color, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, retired NYPD police officers, members of the FDNY, journalists, musicians, photographers...the list could go on and on."

Again you prove yourself to be a fool.
