49. Foraging and cooking Wild Mushrooms
48. Plum Jam
Following on from my recent plum jam film vimeo.com/28556006 I decided to have a go at filming my local mushroom forager and chef, Nik Westacott.

He took me to our local Sussex woods and we spent the best part of a day filming.

To be honest, I don't even like mushrooms that much but the dish Nik cooked up in the woods with these wild mushrooms was just amazing.

I want to thank Nik again for all his help. Do visit his website 82fishbourne.co.uk He's a lovely chap.

Please, please be careful if you do go foraging for wild mushrooms - there really are a lot of poisonous ones out there and they sometimes look very similar to the edible ones so do take an expert.

The music was royalty free from neosounds.com and was called 'Lost'

This was filmed with the Canon 5D Mark II and various lenses. And it was coloured in FCPX with mlooks from motionvfx.com/

Hope you like the film.
Best

    Good story Carl,

    My thoughts:

I would have liked something more compelling at the beginning to keep my interest. I want to be made curious about what I'm watching - I almost stopped when the music went longer than a few seconds. Something I've learned my own projects I've produced.

The visuals and audio narrative were solid. Color grading was a little flat for my taste but that could be any number of things related to what was used to render out/camera profile used

As a foodie, I loved the story itself for what it represented!

    Well done!

Thanks so much James. Coming from you that is a real compliment. Don't tell anyone the grade was done in fcpx!

I liked this a lot Carl. It actually reminded me of a foraging piece I saw on TV (BBC actually) for a Cookery program.

I like the pace of the piece, the audio narrative helps draw the viewer in. Without wanting to be influenced too much by Cliff's comments, the only thing I would say is that it does take sometime before the narrative comes in so it's important the imagery keeps visual interest...

I personally like the "reverse" forage on the mushrooms. It might have been a good idea to try a macro lens for a subject like mushrooms. That could have given extra textural depth to the imagery.

As I tweeted, one of your best yet. Enjoyed it!

Thanks again Jon really appreciate your feedback. I went for a bit of narrative this time as was wary it was longer than the plum video and the music was a bit darker so needed to keep the interest going.
You might be surprised to know that my 100mm macro was used a lot in this video especially for those reverse shots at the beginning. Some of those mushrooms were tiny!

Loved it in so many ways. Never thought I'd want to take a frying pan out into the woods so bad. Maybe I need to do a likeminded piece on "Ramps" in West Virginia. It's a bit of a cultural, holy-grail quest event every spring in them hills.

I love the music. Who did it?

Thanks Ernie. Get out in those woods and do it. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the day filming.
The music was royalty free believe it or not from neosounds.com and was called 'Lost'

    Wow! Quick response. Excellent. Royalty-free.

I forgot to write that the reverse foraging was brilliant. Thanks!

Carl I really enjoyed this! It had an excellent feel, the feel was key
  • www.carlpendle.com plus 4 months ago
Thanks again Danny. I try to get that 'feel' in my videos. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't. The plum jam one was very popular if you've not seen it.
    How's Bangkok. Still raining?
  • Danny Bull 4 months ago
Cool Carl, I'll check that one out too. Central Bangkok has been holding up to the barriers of sandbags on the outskirts. Its really back and forth on whether or not its going to get flooded, so we'll just see what happens. The outskirts are certainly flooded though, a meter or two in most areas.

Great work Carl, beautifully shot. I really like the colour grade and it is fantastically paced. Very engaging!

Thanks Mat. It was difficult to know how to film and cut it to keep people watching to the end. After all mushroom foraging isn't exactly a fast paced activity.
