The MFA Applied Craft and Design Program’s 2011 Design Build project focused on the first phase of a Learning Center at the Donald E Long Juvenile Detention Center in Northeast Portland. First year students worked with visiting artists Jack Sanders and Butch Anthony to convert an existing, empty detention unit into a library for Long Center students. PNCA writer-inresidence Barry Sanders (and volunteer teacher at the Center) acted as client and liaison, facilitating interaction between MFA students, and Long Center students and staff.
