The landscape of the Alpilles is one of arid limestone peaks separated by dry valleys.
1889 the painter van Gogh committed himself to the hospital at Saint Paul-de-Mausole, a former monastery.
During his stay, the clinic and its garden became the main subjects of his paintings.
It has a spectacular position in the Alpilles mountains, set atop a rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south. The village gives its name to the aluminium ore Bauxite.
The city has a long history, and was of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981
