Green Connected Home: Dynamic Windows
In the Connected Sustainable Home, windows are dynamic: they are programmable and move in response to the needs of the inhabitants. Windows control the passage of light, view, heat, and air across the exterior walls of buildings. Because exterior conditions and internal activities can vary dynamically, windows require continual adjustment to maintain the most comfortable and energy-efficient relationships of interiors to exteriors. But capabilities for adjustment of traditional windows are limited: window openings are of fixed size and location, and cumbersome mechanical devices, such as shutters and blinds, are used to vary the transmission properties of openings. With dynamic windows, the sizes and shapes of apertures are electronically controlled, and they can vary freely. Variation can be under the direct control of building users; it can respond automatically to sensor input; and it can implement strategies for minimizing building energy use.
