Great Job! I like the moon-timelapse at 02:50 very much. Did you use something to illuminate the foreground?

Absolutely awesome! Some places showcased in your film are obvious others, not so much. All are very beautiful! Is there a way I can see a list of all the locations you show in the film?

    Thanks!

    David,

Beautifully shot and composed - are the scenes from 03:29 to 03:55 in Ladakh and/or Zanskar?
  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
What an eye! Shots were made in Leh region, Ladakh.
Have you been in Ladakh ?
just for fun, trucks in the snow shot is probably one of the highest timelapse ever made : 5600m (18,380 ft)!

If you love Ladakh, I have a nice photo collection on our facebook page : facebook.com/pixelsrevenge
  • 4Moorhens2 plus 4 months ago
Yes I have been to Ladakh, Zanskar, Lahaul [didn't get to Spiti nor Mustang :( ] and Tibet.

The Indian truck gave me a clue and the Gompa at 03:29 seemed familiar - where and what Gompa is it actually?
  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
It is Thiksey monastery, near Leh.
You can see it here : facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150375760628134&set=a.10150370600078134.400495.213480233133&type=3&theater

The next 20 photos are also from Thiksey
  • 4Moorhens2 plus 4 months ago
    David,

I will certainly look at your photos, but the north western Himalayas and Tibet are too dusty and dry for me - much prefer the eastern Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Sichuan forested Himalayan ranges. Do you have any photos or timelapses from those areas?
  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
It was indeed quite dry and dusty, and we had to fight hard against dust on sensors. I only went to Ladakh for a video shooting, and I don't know (yet) any other place in that area. Why did you go that much in Himalaya ? Just for fun ?
  • 4Moorhens2 plus 4 months ago
Yes, it was mainly "just for fun" travelling independently but I did teach English privately in Kathmandu for 6 months during one of my four extended "holidays" to Nepal, Pakistan, India, China etc. However all that was 20 to 25 years ago - I'm too old for independent trekking now and I certainly wouldn't want to go on an organised trip.

I just love the culture and the landscape of the high Himalayas!

Im curious about the shot of the milky way, which lens you used, and the ISO ratings?
The clouds in 3:03 are absolutely amazing!
  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
Hey Ru Dee! You probably won't believe me, but the milky way shot was done with a 350D Canon, a 10-22mm EF-S, and ISO was set to 100.
  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
The trick was done in post. Do you know image stacking ? It's an astronomer trick, where you take many pictures, that you carefully align, then you blend all those pictures together, to get a denoise effect (since noise is different in each picture). Once heavily denoised, you can then boost light as you wish.
  • Ru Dee 4 months ago
Ahh, yes, i know that trick, but its seems that you've captured a lots of shots in that scene, once the blending process then the timeline in final cut, for example: 4-5 shots in 20-30s. of exposure to become one frame of the timelapse, its good to know how many images are blended in one frame from the sequence..although it is insanely good looking timelapse. Congrats! :)
  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
I had less than a thousand frames, but the result isn't stretched at all : instead of displaying frame 100, I do average from let's say 90 to 110. Then instead of just 101, this in an average between 91 and 111, etc...
The annoying thing is that before blending, you need to neutralize apparent sky rotation, to avoid stars to trail.
  • Ru Dee 4 months ago
Thank you for the feedback! That is truly commitment for the output :), 1 days shooting, 1 day post production for a 3 seconds of outstanding imagery! Looking forward for more! :)

  • David Coiffier plus 4 months ago
Merci Thomas.

So can you give me some advice on how to set mey camera for time lapse during a sunset or sunrise? Should I use all manual settings? Also, what frame rate would recommend to make lovely images such as these?
