A+E Ident Screen
An Experiment with an Ident screen for the amateur films we produce.
16:9 Illustrator file saved as a PSD file then used as a mask for the graded smoke.
Sparkles created in Motion then laid over the smoke but under the mask. Everything else is just fades and text.

Although I didn't know what I was doing, I found it easier than expected.
Took the photoshop logo file into FCP, blended the clip in multiply blend mode over the smoke layer. That means, where the white was (box shape around the lettering) became clear and showed the smoke through. Where the black was, stayed black and covered the smoke. Then I generated some sparkles in Motion, exported as quicktime, imported that quicktime file into FCP and made another track layer above the smoke, but under the mask. The sparkles I used 'screen' blending mode.
The there was some simple text underneath in orange.
Then I did some fade ins and fade outs on the smoke layer with a soft edge at a slight angle, and copied those fades onto the text layer and the sparkles layer.
Add some cool music.
Job done.
Hope this helps

Avey: Very cool, dude. The soundtrack really enhances the effect, too. Blending layers can be a lot of fun, but can often be very hit and miss. But you got it spot on, it's great.
I won't even try to begin to understand how it's done.
You are very clever ! :)
