There are nearly 16,000 3rd grade students in Colorado who cannot read proficiently. Students who are not reading proficiently in the early grades typically do not catch up when they should be transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. Poor reading ability in early grades is clearly linked to high school dropouts and other indicators of this nature.
If we want to close our achievement gaps, reduce our high school dropout rate, and break the cycle of poverty in our community, we need to focus on our youngest readers.
Fight for our children's future and join the conversation today.
