This project was a collaborative effort that spanned countries & time zones with several artists working long hours to finally put this piece out. The passage comes from an Old Testament prophecy, taken from Ezekiel 37. Not only is the text extremely descriptive and visual, lending itself to beautiful imagery, but show that where there is death and exile, hope and life can be found.

Dry Bones would not have been possible without the extremely talented artists with loads of patience, who I had the privilege of working with.

Dan DiFelice. Director, Compositor, VFX Director
David Tate. DP, Editor
Michael Rinnan. CG Artist: Tracking, Muscle Dev/Animation
Renato Marques. CG Artist: Skin & Vein Dev/Animation
Justin Burton. CG Artist: Previz
Matt Fezz. Colorist
Salomon Ligthelm. Score/Sound Design
Chris Baden. Talent
Luke Atencio. VO Artist

We shot the piece entirely on the 7d and post work was done in c4d and Nuke. The project started in April with boards & CG dev, we shot in early June outside of Las Vegas, and spent June through October refining the CG as well as the composite, sound design, and color.

Dry Bones started off as a personal project of mine, but had it not been for Adam Devizia & the A/G picking up DB and funding a significant portion of it, it's possible the project would have not taken flight.

Special thanks to:
Michael Jones & Glenn Stewart for your collaborative efforts, and Justin Jackson for use of your truck.

This is so Good! The VFX is amazingly executed—High End Studio quality!
Q: Were you guys tracking the weather before shooting or was some of the sky CG as well?
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
    Hey thanks Derick.
The skies are all replaced...some are time lapse skies that I've shot, and a couple of the skies I just built from a bunch of sky elements. (The skies were all in comp though)

Great stuff. Looks amazing. Only thing I wished to see was a vast army rather than an individual.
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
agreed dude...it's potentially in the works
  • JJ Fabre plus 4 months ago
Yeah, I was expecting a vast army at the end too. :)

The CG is dope, but I like even more how tastefully you guys executed the visuals and the concept... I do second the idea of ending on the army. Not sure how you keep from ending up with a bunch of naked dudes though??? :)
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
    Thanks a ton!
Maybe we'll just have to put a censorship black bar or scramble the image!
  • Ryan Simmons 3 months ago
Maybe you create your "naked army" by creating a shot of a multitude from a distance, with heat waves distorting them enough not to see details, but just to give an impression of your "army". Either way, you did an awesome job.

This is really great...That scripture has allways triggered my imagination and you guys were dead on! (no pun intented)

This type of production needs to be done more often ( I need to do my share ) and I am so glad that you and salomon are bringing the Word to Life....thanks :)
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
Thanks man...that's one of the reasons I felt so drawn to this...it's just so visual.

I fully agree...less volume and more depth. It's definitely difficult when you've been working on one spot for an extended period...but that lets you hit the details.

GREAT VIDEO.... I recognized Salomon's unique and amazing style right away!

    Amazing photography!

I would have loved to see a more creative editing on this amazing video. But is still one of the best christian videos I've seen on vimeo.
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
    Thanks man!
Yeah Salo stands out like none other.

You know...it definitely crossed my mind to push the edit and really intensify it, however I personally tend to do that when I'm trying to hide weaker visuals. So I guess I just wanted the shots to be able to stand & hold up on their own. But I do agree..the piece could've definitely had that extra bit.

Great job! You made this passage come to life (literally, har har). That is a problem trying to show an army of naked dudes without showing they're naked parts. But maybe you could stay waist-up and have a bunch of guys appear behind the one guy. Then go to a really distant shot of a large crowd- so you couldn't make out the nitty gritty details. Just an idea :)

  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
    Thanks a bunch!
    Yeah Salo is the man.
Script is a passage taken straight out of the Old Testament (Ezekiel 37:1-10)...removed a few bits out here & there for pacing.

guys, great great work. absolutely love it! what glass did you use? i love how crisp everything looked... not sure if that was your glass or color artist (or a combination). killer job, all of you.
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
the main lens was the zeiss cp2. we used a couple other zeiss primes, but the cp2 was where it's at. sharpness definitely also came in with the color as well (so yeah combo deal). thanks a bunch for the kind words! much appreciated

Well don bro, just awesome. Really brought that passage to life. Man it would be so legit if you did really key parts in the Bible. It would really bring it to life for those that have a hard time understanding what they are reading sometimes. This was an excellent piece and I am stoked to see more of your work.
  • danDifelice plus 4 months ago
