The first prototype of my new project, exploring synchronisation in nature based on ideas put forward by Steven Strogatz (ted.com/talks/steven_strogatz_on_sync.html). The aim is to make these gadgets solar powered, and possibly use a small sample player instead of the additive synthesis I'm currently using. The idea is to recreate choruses of "synthetic" crickets or frogs. The devices communicate which each other using Xbee radio transmitter/receiver modules (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBee).
