Holy cow. Time to throw my 7D in the bin*

Got an iPhone 4S yesterday and got up this morning to go for a surf. No surf, so thought I'd shoot some stuff to see what the new camera is like on the 4S. Got home, looked at the footage, and couldn't believe it came out of a phone. Was so excited so thought I'd quickly cut a vid to share the goodness.

It's actually amazing. The automatic stabilisation seems to work wonders, and gets rid of most the jello. Depth of field is flipping awesome. Colours are really good straight out the camera, but I did give this footage a slight grade with the 3-way colour wheel in Final Cut.

Yesssssss //////////

Cut with Final Cut 7.

Holy crap that's impressive... Apple really did step it up. You should shoot a short film on that thing just to see the limits ;)
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Sure is impressive! I reckon I'll definitely be shooting more with it..

Wow, that is amazing. I was going to upgrade my phone and buy a flip, but I see I won't be doing that now. Smokin'!!
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
    No need for a flip!

Lovely work, also it's pretty quick to capture good images and edit together qucikly. I think this lies in the fact that you can grip it in a certain manner and effectively use your arms as a dolly :) Added to vimeo.com/channels/iphonehd

    Thank you.

This gripping 'in a certain manner,' is it a specific technique?
  • The Film Artist plus 4 months ago
Hold the phone in the palm of your left hand, four fingers on top and sitting in your palm with your thumb on the left snugly. There is enough space left for the camera. This will give you a tight and stable grip, now hold the phone at head height with your arm fixed down with your palm facing towards you, little gap between it and the phone you can now swing your body round or use your arm as a dolly, use your right arm to control the left if u like, bend your knees for added flexibility, this is for right handers like me :) try it vimeo.com/16048559 used it here

  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Ta! Yes slight grade, just using the 3 way colour wheel in FCP.
  • TMFvisuals 4 months ago
im sorry to ask but can you explain how you used it. it looks amazing.

Fantastic video, not only for a phone camera, but for any camera. Care to elaborate on the color grading ?
  • Mickey Gral 4 months ago
Awesome video, I also am curious as to how this look is created. I have been looking for ages on how to get the color like this but I can't find any tutorials or anything and I can't seem to figure it out myself.

Thanks for the video! Looks great! Can you tell me what the framerate is? On my iPhone, it varies ("up to 30fps" sometimes 26fps?!?)... Is your footage constant framerate? Thanks!
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Thank you Anthony. I did actually notice that a few of the clips were different frame rates.. some said 29.97 and others said 29.98 fps. But not as varied as what you've experienced. It would be epic if there were selectable frame rates.

I've had similar issues on the 4. It changes and there is nothing you can do about it. This causes problems if you are trying to capture any dialogue. But I've made it work:

This is great. One question though, does the 4S let you lock exposure, or any other manual control?
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Don't think the stock camera app has any manual controls, but I'm sure there'll be apps that come out.
  • John C. Chu 4 months ago
Great video. Amazing stuff. There is an app called Filmic Pro, that currently doesn't support the 1080p mode [720p only] on the 4S but allows 24 frames, higher bit rate? and uncompressed audio if desired. It also allows locking focus, exposure and white balance. I'm inspired by your video.
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Thanks John. I'll have to check that app out. Locking exposure, focus, & white balance would be very handy. There was quite a bit of colour shifting going on when I didn't want it to.
  • John Weston 4 months ago
You can lock exposure and focus while shooting by tapping and holding on the screen.
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Oh that is awesome! Just tried it out. Thanks for the tip John.

Really nice video man. Canon and Nikon better do something quick because, lets say with $200 you can get a great phone and a 8mp/1080p camera with apps like almost DSLR and iMovie. Wouldn't throw away the 7D though. Haha
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
    Haha, don't worry I'm holding onto the 7D :)
  •
  • Just out of curiosity does the 4S have any pre color presets in it and if at all ANY manual controls? I noticed the shutter runs a little hot giving that frame flicker when pointing at a TV or lighted billboard. This is CRAZY impressive.
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
No presets or manual controls with the stock camera app, but apparently there are other apps out there that give you more control. I'll have to get onto it.

Awesome video quality, but I would say far from a 7D replacement. There's still a lot more control you'd have with that over your iPhone, not to mention sensor size. Nevertheless, that new phone footage is impressive!
  • Benjamin Dowie 4 months ago
Haha, yes I'm not really throwing my 7D out ;)

For a phone though, it really is very impressive. Much better than I expected.

This is the best iPhone footage I've seen...well done m8. Can't wait till somebody hacks this bad body and starts messing around with the bit rate and resolution...exactly the reason why I got the 64GB version.

Thank you Mvakleko. Yes, the 64GB is a good idea.

could you estimate how much space does a 1 minute video takes on this 4S iPhone? 30mb? 60mb? just wondering...

    I'm a night owl, used the iPhone 4S in a nightclub. 1:10s = ~200MB.
