The Austin Humane Society received 105 animals recovered by search and rescue teams following the Bastrop wildfires that started on September 4, 2011. Veterinarians, staff and volunteers have been caring for and treating injured animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, a pig and more. To date, they have had 73 pets successfully reunited with their families. At the start of October, the Austin Humane Society began allowing unclaimed Bastrop fire animals to be adopted. Lisa Starr, public relations manager at the Austin Humane Society, said that 12 have been adopted so far, with several animals “still waiting to meet their forever families.”
