Great! I was wondering if you could tell us what format you found it in and how you encoded it?

    Looks like 16mm
  • Jeff Altman plus 4 months ago
Yep 16mm Kodachrome. Transferred to video on a Spirit Datacine.

This looks amazing! How did you digitalize this?
  • Jeff Altman plus 4 months ago
Thanks! This footage ran live off of a Spirit Datacine, through a da Vinci 2k Plus, and then directly into Final Cut for capture as a Quicktime.

Nice, and good music! Some of the show names point to 1963 ("In 1963, producer Monte Proser announced that he had exclusive rights from Rogers and Hammerstein to produce their musicals in Las Vegas. He opened with a Flower Drum Song starring Jack Soo." )

A great find, real interesting snapshot of 1960's Americana. Did the original footage need anything in the way of colour correction & grading or is it pretty much as you got it?
  • Jeff Altman plus 4 months ago
Well, any piece of film, no matter what it is, is going to need color correction; its part of the process of going from a physical medium to digital (or analog) image. That said, older film like this does tend to get a little magenta-y, so that was compensated for. Other than that, this stuff was very clean.

Stunning looking footage. I especially love the beginning on the train. Thank you so much for sharing.

Was that a California Zephyr you think?
  • Jeff Altman plus 4 months ago
Logically, that would make sense. I have no way confirming that, though.

Love it! This is the Las Vegas I remember from my childhood there. But why is everything so fast? It's like you're running silent speed 16mm (16 or 18fps) at sound speed (24fps).
  • Jeff Altman plus 4 months ago
What you are seeing is already slowed down to 18fps. If I had to guess, the night stuff may have been shot at slower speed to accommodate the exposure.
  • Mr. Neutron 4 months ago
It's possible. They maybe have even shot it at 16fps as that's not an unheard of speed. Hell, maybe 12? I always use people's walks to judge the correct frame rate.

  • Wonderful video! Now you'll need to visit downtown Las Vegas and check out our Neon Boneyard Museum (neonmuseum.org).
