iPhone 4S / Canon 5d MKII Side by Side Comparison
4 months ago
Here's a "fair" test between the iPhone 4S and the Canon 5D MK II. I made a little rig that allowed me to shoot both cameras at the same time side by side. All scenes are perfectly synced together so you can pause and scrutinize the frames! See photo of the makeshift rig in the photo area.
Exposure, shutter speed, frame rate and picture style were matched as close as possible between the two cameras. (I used the Zacuto Z-finder to help me adjust exposure for both iPhone and 5D)
This test shows that the tiny F2.4 lens and sensor on the iPhone are pretty nice. It even got a little shallow depth of field!
I did not overlay the exact ISO and Stops 5D settings per shot. It was too much to keep track for this simple test. To be fair I matched 5D exposure to the iPhone so no "Cinestyle" / 24p here.
Here are the settings:
iPhone 4S
- AE.AF locked. That's all you have!
Canon 5D MKII
- Canon 50mm 1.4
- ISO 160 ~ 640 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
- F 7~22 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
- Shutter 1/60th
- Auto WB
- Standard Picture Style
- 1080p 30

Nice clean comparison though! iPhone 5 needs a little micro prime kit, with a tiny little follow focus and all!
on your DSLR??
but IPhone4S has problem on LED screen recording.
thank you, this comparison is very useful.
The iPhone falls apart in these areas:
- Compression / codec (it's very noisy even in daylight)
- Tiny tiny tiny tiny sensor
- Lens (f2.4 is great for a cell phone though)
- Shutter (no control / stuck on auto)
- Framerate (stuck at 30p)
- No picture styles (contrast and sharpening is heavy)
The only points I give to the 4S are the resolution and portability.
but the 5D has blur on the plat.
I also know that it just phone camera. :)
The faster shutter will give you the Omaha beach saving private Ryan opening feel :)
Also my apology if I offended you with reinforcing my point that it's only a cell phone. It was not my intention, just making sure we keep it real and in context.
Anyway, comparing these two cameras is complete lunacy, the 5D is an industry standard video camera, used to shoot things such as House MD and the Lawrence of a Arabia remake.
The 4S is just a phone. Resolution means nothing.
I don't think that comparing the two is lunacy, but the test is very selective. Lets see how the Bokeh looks on the iPhone... oh, wait..
Aside from the resolution, why would anyone compare these two cameras?
You can now get apps that allow datarate selection (up to 48Kb/s and uncompressed audio at a selection of framerates including 24p) for the phone.
What I find really interesting is how people gripe about picture quality so much when the iPhone 4S camera is light years ahead of the crappy SD camera I was using only in 2005 to make an indie feature with!
What makes a shot interesting is not the camera, but the light and the composition. I've seen a few videos on Vimeo so far where if I wasn't actually told they were shot on an iPhone I would never have known any different.
Any tips for conversion?

Yes the camera is impressive in the 4S, but really/! Comparing to something with a full frame sensor? What is the point? I'm just waiting for a Sony F65 side by side!
So much less detail in the 4S... look at the leaves and things... and that shutter artefacts on the billboards - nasty.
"It even got a little depth of field!" You mean "slightly shallow depth of field". Which isn't really what it is anyway.
It's all about your expectations and the right tool for the job
Clearly... the 4S can hang with the 5D with the right expectations and needs
Apart from the color, the only thing I notice is, some highlights in the dark areas is a little better on the 5D.
It'll give some kelvin balance and white balance shift. Peaking and magic zoom. :D
Thanks for that though QBeta! Sweet find!
The way the DSLR's were exciting to filmmakers who couldn't normal get access to comparable tools
The iPhone has just continued allowing more people access to get effective tools
It's a great 1k camera just like the 5D!
this means only one thing: Canon should put not only 60fps on their new Mark III but also a carrier SIM slot hahaha.
A professional camera doesn't need sms or ringtones.
but what this really means is that phones with such an amazing video capture will kill all consumer handycams, I don't see any good reason for a family to buy a camcorder if the iphone can shoot like that.
Sony, canon and others brands will lost all the consumer videocameras clients in a few years for sure.
It will be interesting to see how the iP4S does with potentially moiré situations.
Here's an article with some insight into Moiré-Busting ideas:

Damn, reading all my comments makes me look like an undercovered marketsman working for pany hahaha
One last foolishness on my part, has the iphone full-frame processor?
I just do not drink this comparison ... sorry
All the best :p

confused.
As far as I know, there is no way to "Lock" the auto-exposure and auto-focus systems on the Apple "native" camera app.
You can show the camera where to focus and expose by tapping on a portion of the image, but if that spot wanders into a different focus or exposure subject area, the setting changes.
When I saw your note of "native camera app" I thought that was the name of something new. Ha.
But here's a tip: You can use FiLMiC Pro to lock focus and exposure (if you start rolling first) AND it will capture video in 720p30 if that's what you specify. $1!
Here is a different sort of test: Stabilization. Marrying an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4S so one can judge both stabilization zero and the permanent stabilization of the iPhone 4S while seeing the improved image quality.

But now I know. Thanks.
Impressive.
