Here's a "fair" test between the iPhone 4S and the Canon 5D MK II. I made a little rig that allowed me to shoot both cameras at the same time side by side. All scenes are perfectly synced together so you can pause and scrutinize the frames! See photo of the makeshift rig in the photo area.

Exposure, shutter speed, frame rate and picture style were matched as close as possible between the two cameras. (I used the Zacuto Z-finder to help me adjust exposure for both iPhone and 5D)

This test shows that the tiny F2.4 lens and sensor on the iPhone are pretty nice. It even got a little shallow depth of field!

I did not overlay the exact ISO and Stops 5D settings per shot. It was too much to keep track for this simple test. To be fair I matched 5D exposure to the iPhone so no "Cinestyle" / 24p here.

Here are the settings:

iPhone 4S

- AE.AF locked. That's all you have!

Canon 5D MKII

- Canon 50mm 1.4
- ISO 160 ~ 640 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
- F 7~22 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
- Shutter 1/60th
- Auto WB
- Standard Picture Style
- 1080p 30

  • That was very impressive, I have seen a few videos now of these comparisons and the technology just blows me away. I liked the stock "warm" tone of the iPhone but if Apple could incorporate an adjustable shutter speed and iso I would say it would have been right up there with the 5DMKII and that is crazy considering its a PHONE!!!!

For a fixed field of view it could fare pretty well in a lot of situations. No doubt it's another tool in the box.. Still, you are rather limited by field of view : )

Nice clean comparison though! iPhone 5 needs a little micro prime kit, with a tiny little follow focus and all!
  • Chris 3 months ago
it is not really that amazing because if you want to shoot shallow depth of field a iphone is absolutely useless : P
  • Chris there are actually some shots of the 4S doing shallow DOF and was quite good.

Brilliant comparison, Trust me it's not just about the quality but being able to manipulate and capture things you could never do with the big and bulky 5D that would run of battery before you know it. I have a GH2 and some great lens but the new 4S just takes cinematography a new level. vimeo.com/30594527 or vimeo.com/30578363 plus shoot, edit and upload in one go, the proof is in the pudding :) [TFA30]

Interesting to see the rolling shutter effect on those electronic signs in the iPhone 4S sample. After I watched those extensive Zacuto sponsored tests, I'm not surprised at the closeness of the two here. Given a chance to rent an ARRI Alexa for a project, I would jump at it, but quite often we might be able to get away with less.
  • Chris Corner plus 3 months ago
I suspect part of the problem that makes those screens look so bad is that it looks like the iPhone is running a much faster shutter speed -- there is less motion blur throughout. Which means it's using even less light on it's mosquito sized sensor! Someone make an app to realese a few more control on that little guy...

IPhone4S seems like better then DSLR on moving object capture.
but IPhone4S has problem on LED screen recording.
thank you, this comparison is very useful.
  • Rgrain plus 4 months ago
Let's not jump the shark here guys :) This test is really only to show that the 4S is coming close to the 5D but in NO WAY is it better. The iPhone is a great 1080p pocket camera and shows us where technology is heading. Give it two three years and we should see some interesting micro high performance cameras.

The iPhone falls apart in these areas:

    - Compression / codec (it's very noisy even in daylight)
    - Tiny tiny tiny tiny sensor
    - Lens (f2.4 is great for a cell phone though)
    - Shutter (no control / stuck on auto)
    - Framerate (stuck at 30p)
    - No picture styles (contrast and sharpening is heavy)

The only points I give to the 4S are the resolution and portability.
  • Nashawn Osborne 4 months ago
Not to mention the lack of DOF control ect. People need to calm down. The quality is good but there is more into than picture quality.
  • cooldin 4 months ago
when you stop the IPhone4S movie then you can see the plat of car clearly. that's my point.
but the 5D has blur on the plat.
I also know that it just phone camera. :)
  • Rgrain plus 4 months ago
That's because the iPhone shutter is very fast in broad daylight to bring down exposure. Motion blur is practically non existent. You can do the same with the 5D or any other manual cameras. Just set the shutter faster instead of 1/60th (30p) or 1/50th (5D 23.976p - the correct way would be 1/48th but it's not available on 5D)

The faster shutter will give you the Omaha beach saving private Ryan opening feel :)

Also my apology if I offended you with reinforcing my point that it's only a cell phone. It was not my intention, just making sure we keep it real and in context.

Don't you mean "jump the gun"? Jump the Shark is the moment when a TV series starts to go downhill - it originates from Happy Days, when the Fonz famously jumped over a shark whilst on waterskis.

Anyway, comparing these two cameras is complete lunacy, the 5D is an industry standard video camera, used to shoot things such as House MD and the Lawrence of a Arabia remake.

The 4S is just a phone. Resolution means nothing.
  • stib inator 4 months ago
ahh, no, actually the 5D is an industry standard STILLS camera, that has been widely adopted by film makers as a much cheaper alternative to full frame video cameras like the Red and Arri Alexa.

I don't think that comparing the two is lunacy, but the test is very selective. Lets see how the Bokeh looks on the iPhone... oh, wait..
  • George Horne 4 months ago
True - but it's still used by industry professionals as a video camera also.

Aside from the resolution, why would anyone compare these two cameras?
  • One thing to consider for anyone who has used the 4S is that there is far less moire and aliasing on the phone than there is on the Canon DSLRs!

You can now get apps that allow datarate selection (up to 48Kb/s and uncompressed audio at a selection of framerates including 24p) for the phone.

What I find really interesting is how people gripe about picture quality so much when the iPhone 4S camera is light years ahead of the crappy SD camera I was using only in 2005 to make an indie feature with!

What makes a shot interesting is not the camera, but the light and the composition. I've seen a few videos on Vimeo so far where if I wasn't actually told they were shot on an iPhone I would never have known any different.

So much less detail in the 4S... look at the leaves and things... and that shutter artefacts on the billboards - nasty.

I have to say in many of the shot the i phone looked better. The 4s keep better contrast the blacks simply looked blacker, but the 5D has a lot more data I can add a simple curves filter in post and pow the 5D is way better then the Phone not surprising. The main problem I see with the phone is how it clips blacks, so if I shoot an interview with someone in a shadowy area there face will likely be unrecoverable dark, with the 5d I can easily pull the exposure on the face up be a half stop or so in post.

Seriously, why don't you get the point of this comparison ? Nobody's saying that DSLR are useless. Nobody says you can replace a 5D with an iPhone. It's just an visual comparison to see the progress of these tiny sensors. Apart from the controls, you have to say 5D full frame sensor is not so ahead as we all thought. For the public it's so awesome to be able to shoot people you love and the events of your life with such a great quality.

I guess nobody can think that a phone would be as profesional camera, but anyway is funny and quite amazing how far an iphone can go. Also remeber that a few years ago we were using really awfull minidv camcorders.

this means only one thing: Canon should put not only 60fps on their new Mark III but also a carrier SIM slot hahaha.
  • Mike Tesh 4 months ago
Oh I totally agree! DSLR's need to be able to run apps and have wifi and sim slots on them these days. I love shooting with my DSLR but have to admit there is a level of fun to shooting with my iphone and being able to run special filter apps and upload to various sites.
  • QBeta 4 months ago
What you need sir already exists and its name is Sony Nex 7.
  • Mariano Puppo plus 4 months ago
haha, No please! I don't want to make a phone call from my 5D ! I was just joking.
A professional camera doesn't need sms or ringtones.

but what this really means is that phones with such an amazing video capture will kill all consumer handycams, I don't see any good reason for a family to buy a camcorder if the iphone can shoot like that.
Sony, canon and others brands will lost all the consumer videocameras clients in a few years for sure.
  •
  • Carlos Quandt 4 months ago
Just about any camera or mobile phone will shoot 1080 / 30 video these days. The big difference is in the glass. And the full frame sensor shouldn't really make a difference, because only a fraction of its many megapixels are actually used to generate a video frame.
  • Peter iNova plus 4 months ago
Most of the HDSLRs have quite poor moiré control.

It will be interesting to see how the iP4S does with potentially moiré situations.

Here's an article with some insight into Moiré-Busting ideas:

    hdslrreview.com/HDSLRreview/Tech.html
  • Peter iNova plus 4 months ago
Found another. Almost DSLR lets you shoot with locked focus and exposure in 720p30, but image quality is sadly lacking compared to the 720p30 from FiLMiC Pro.
  • Erico Galindo 4 months ago
Carlos Try a Gh2, it's use all the sensor when resizing to 1080p resolution, the sharpness is astonishing. In 720p it renders more resolution than 5D or 7D at 1080p.
  • Carlos Quandt 4 months ago
I didn't know that; I'll give it a try. What about moiré/aliasing? One problem with big-sensor DSRLs is the line-skipping technology used to generate HD video. In combination with good, sharp lenses, the moiré effect tends to become more noticeable.
  • Erico Galindo 4 months ago
This is exactly where the GH2 Shines, make a quick research about GH2's Video capabilitys, it has a special mode called "Extended telecoversion, i.e. CROP MODE", where it uses the sensor's center 2mpx to render 1080p video in 1:1 pixel mapping without the need for using any rescale process. This render the image with absolutely ZERO moire/aliasing. But even in regular video mode without the Crop mode, panasonic gh2 has a Tri-core processor witch uses a much better rescale algorythm than Canon, resolution is superior vastly superior and moire is minimal. Only downside is the 2.0 crop factor for that "bokeh" look, but there is always old vintage 16mm film f1.0, 0.95, f1.2 lens at attractive price lying around in the Dealxtreme for that.
  • Erico Galindo 4 months ago
Ow i would like to add that the GH2 was recently cracked and now can encode video in full hd MJPEG at 120mbits and 4:2:2 color format. Sweet.

Damn, reading all my comments makes me look like an undercovered marketsman working for pany hahaha

I believe it would be best if the 5D was using the Cinestyle picture style. It's well known that the Standard picture style is only for pictures, it kills video. If not for Cinestyle, then an adjusted Neutral picture style would have been fine too, definitely not the Standard though.

I like this. Thanks for doing it. But I'm a little
    confused.

As far as I know, there is no way to "Lock" the auto-exposure and auto-focus systems on the Apple "native" camera app.

You can show the camera where to focus and expose by tapping on a portion of the image, but if that spot wanders into a different focus or exposure subject area, the setting changes.

When I saw your note of "native camera app" I thought that was the name of something new. Ha.

But here's a tip: You can use FiLMiC Pro to lock focus and exposure (if you start rolling first) AND it will capture video in 720p30 if that's what you specify. $1!

Here is a different sort of test: Stabilization. Marrying an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4S so one can judge both stabilization zero and the permanent stabilization of the iPhone 4S while seeing the improved image quality.

    vimeo.com/30657394
  • Rgrain plus 4 months ago
iOS 5 allows you to lock it in native camera app.
  • Peter iNova plus 4 months ago
I'm using the iPhone 4S with Apple's camera app. I assume that's the one you're calling "native camera app." If there is a setting that changes its behavior, I'd like to know it, but you can only tap on the image to cause it to focus and expose for that smaller area of the image, as indicated by a smaller focus box. That's a selection, not a lock for the duration of the shot. As I pan and that area encounters other subject matter, e.g. nearer objects or brighter/darker objects, the exposure and focus is renewed. Where am I missing what?
  • Luke Peeters 4 months ago
IOS 5 is what you are missing!!!
  • Sebastian Krampe 4 months ago
I got a 4s, of course with iOS 5. Can't find an option for locking aperture and focus in the native camera app.
  • Lawrence Marshall 4 months ago
Press and hold on the image to lock AE and Focus. This is a new feature of iOS 5. You must upgrade your iPhone 4 to this OS. The iphone 4S comes with iOS 5.
  • Peter iNova plus 4 months ago
Got it. Didn't know Apple had implemented that. Much handier than others' implementation of the idea. Nothing on Apple's iPhone sell page or even iPhone tips page made any mention of it. apple.com/iphone/tips/
