
Russia's Children's Prison Camps

All across Russia there are 64 prison camps housing 18,000 boys from ages 13 to 18 officially; but many appear to be much younger. These prison camps are also found in other former Soviet states across Central Asia. Conditions range from minimal to appalling as the needs of these children far exceed the state budgets. Their crime - most were living in the streets, stealing to feed themselves because there were no parents at home to care for them. The crime really starts in the home Rampant alcoholism amongst men in Russia is one of many causes for family breakdown and the victims are the children who have to make their own way.
