1. 5D Mk II Low Light Testing @ Agave Nightclub
3 years ago
This video was shot using the Canon 5D Mark II on a modular shoulder mount rig (Zacuto rods, RedRock shoulder mount, RedRock grips, Hyson Films 4-stage X-Matte mattebox, JBKCine extended Follow Focus, TV Logic LVM-071W 7" monitor, external V-mount battery mounted behind camera, Giottos quick-release). The only lighting used was what was available in the nightclub. No controllable or camera-mounted lights were used. The prime focus (no pun intended) was to see how well the camera would record this low-light scenario before using the rig in a real production environment. I feel it did very well, despite the amount of noise that was introduced from the high ISO setting.

To give the video a slightly over-cranked (slow-motion) feel, all the raw footage was conformed from 30p to 24p.

Out of the large collection of lenses we have, only two were used; the Canon 35mm f/1.4L and the Canon 135mm f/2L. These are noted in the bottom-right area of the video on a clip-per-clip basis.

No color-timing and/or color-grading was used on any of these shots; they are all uncorrected in their raw state.

Edited in Final Cut Studio 2 in a couple of hours.

Marco, Very interesting. Thanks for the comprehensive details. I take it the camera was running in auto (that is no tweaked settings with aperture/ISO etc?) Really impressive.

The quality is incredible, there is enough light to catch everything I would even dimm a little if it can allows to remove some noise. But damn! The colors are so rich!

The 24 fps thing, where is it in FC? Like how every movements are smooth

Very nice. This video put a smile on my face. Especially when that dude got rejected. Brings back some memories. I wish more people included lens info in the videos they post here. Great idea!

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone!

Carlos: I was sitting on the fence about whether or not to add that clip because I felt bad, but I figured since we've all been there...

Ron: Every shot was in AE-lock mode, except for possibly one (one of the bar shots with the bottles) only because I forgot to lock it. Sure would be nice to have full manual controls, SIGH.

Joe: Part of the problem was that some of the light was so random (sometimes overly bright, sometime no light) that it was hard to keep a good medium since I didn't have control over any of the lighting or a reliable fill light that was always on. But yeah, I think the DJ (there were 2) with the blue lighting could have been brought down a bit. I conformed the 30p footage to 24p using Cinema Tools with the Batch Conform tool. Takes 2 seconds to do with no re-encoding needed (basically just changes the metadata).

Ken: Yeah, I felt for the guy. And yeah, it would be nice if there was an automated way in which clips retained camera/lens metadata through all encoding paths and could overlay all sorts of info on a clip-per-clip basis! Until then, I'll do the old-school overlay, lol.

Looks great Marco. I'm surprised you got such consistent results with the Canon lenses.

What was your workflow? I have a 5D2 and batch convert everything to ProRes. The raw files are way too slow to edit even with our 8 core machine.

Here's some goofin' around test footage I shot the other day. I retimed to the footage to 24p via Compressor. Slow mo was just simple stuff in FCP.

You can download the QT to see it in 720p.

    Again, great stuff man!
  • OneRiver Media pro 2 years ago
Thanks for the nice words, Barlow!

Well, if you think about it, the results with the Canon lenses being consistent without manual HD control isn't too surprising because even if I (we) had manual controls, it would have been similar to the automatic settings the camera picked since it was so low-light in there: fastest aperture the lens can do, high ISO, slow shutter speed. It's one of the rare circumstances where you don't have much room to make the settings any different even if you were able to.

For this test (and only this test) I worked in native H.264 throughout and it was painful. Batch converting to ProRes prior to editing is definitely the way to go.
  • Jon Rawlinson pro 2 years ago
I've been using mpeg streamclip to convert the h.264 to XDCAM HD 1080p30 and am getting great results.

looking forward to more of your work

    cheers

    Hello Marco,

Great footage man, it is amazing what that camera can do in low light. Quick question how did you convert the 30F footage to 24F. Did you use AE or FCP and what was the process?

    Thanks a lot in advance
  • OneRiver Media pro 2 years ago
Thank you for the compliment. Yes, I'm finding the 5D2 to be THE camera to use for low-light shooting. Even our EX1 can't match it.

I batch conformed all the footage from 30p to 24p using Cinema Tools' batch conform function. You simply pick the folder where the files are and it'll conform it to your frame-rate of choice. It only takes a few seconds since all it's doing it re-wrapping the file with updated metadata to specify the files are 24p instead of 30p. Keep in mind this is a conforming process, not a converting process, so the footage will be about 80% slower than normal (and any audio will be de-tuned). If you want a slightly over-cranked effect, this is perfect for that which is why I opted to do that for this test.

Thanks a lot Marco. I actually like the slight slow motion it gives it a very dreamy feel and look. How do you find the editing process? Do you convert your footage to ProRes or just edit the original H264 files?

    Thanks again
  • OneRiver Media pro 2 years ago
Yes, as mentioned above, batch converting to ProRes prior to editing really seems like the best way to go. H.264 is just kind of painful as an editing format. Just too CPU intensive.

awesome footage although ive heard alot of bad things like the camera is capped at 12 minutes, only shooting mode is 30 fps and now im hearing theres no manuel focus !!??? is this true!!!?
  • OneRiver Media pro 2 years ago
12 minutes, or 4 GB, whichever comes first, but this camera is really geared for traditional shooting where you're shooting short takes.

Yes, only 30 FPS, no 24 or 25 FPS until Canon or a hacker fixes this. Definitely a set back.

You can definitely manual focus but you do not have manual aperture (except if you use a Nikon lens with it), no manual ISO and no manual shutter speed. Again, hopefully this will be remedied by a firmware update by Canon or a hacker. Hackers are making really good progress and the current rumor is Canon has 5D2 firmware updates on the sets of Harry Potter and Iron Man II. Either way, I have a good feeling these essential fixes will come to the camera. For the latest info, check out:

BTW, the lack of manual control I spoke of has since been resolved (as of June 2, 2009) by Canon releasing a firmware update. All aspects of exposure can now be fully manually controlled: ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Still no 24p/25p support though.

Hey marco, did you change it to 30 fps in edit or upload to make it look slow mo? or in camera? if so how? please write me back, thank you.
  • OneRiver Media pro 2 years ago
All the footage was batch-conformed to 24p in Cinema Tools to give it the slo-mo. Footage was then brought into FCP and edited in a 24p timeline. Thanks.

looks awesome.. this footage inspired me to get the 7D. But for those of us that can't afford the "L" glass, what are some good lowlight lense options around the $500-600 range? thanks..
  • OneRiver Media pro 2 years ago
Thanks for the comments. Even though Canon L lenses are a thing of beauty, you can still get very comparable footage with, say, a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens. Great lens, almost as fast, lighter weight and at least half the cost, if not more. Likewise, you could check out the 85mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/1.8. Again, slightly slower than L counterparts, but still very capable and good quality.
  •
  • DJVIBE TV 2 years ago
thanks marco.. good advice! i hope one day I can get some L glass of my own.. some 7D samples of my own coming soon.. shooting DJ RUSKO in a couple weeks.. using my old kit Canon 18-55mm.. hopefully get some better lenses soon.

what do you think of the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens? I heard its a good all around for the 7D. but in low light of a nightclub will it be fast enough?
  • OneRiver Media pro 1 year ago
Good luck with the shoot! I personally haven't tried the Tokina lens you speak of (wont fit the 5D). If you're trying to save a buck but keep good quality, also compare Sigma. I used to have a Sigma that I used with my 10D and 20D before it got stolen. Great lenses for the price. To answer your other question, f/2.8 is as fast as you'll get with any zoom, even Canon L. Not ideal as an f/1.2 or f/1.4 prime, but as good as it'll get for any zoom, if a zoom is required. So "yes", it's a great speed for a zoom, but "no" if it's as fast as you're trying to get if a prime is an option.

everyone says hi ISO so what was the ISO on this video set to great footage BTW
  • OneRiver Media pro 1 year ago
Thanks, Chas. Being that I was shooting in automatic mode with AE Lock at the time (manual mode not being available until about 6 months later), the camera topped out at 3200 ISO, I believe. I was probably closer to 1600 with the 35mm f/1.4 lens though. I was definitely topped out with the 135mm f/2 lens though.

  • Chas B 1 year ago
Yeah duh that's right they had it stuck in auto back then. I have to say though , Canon sure listens to what consumers have to say.
  • OneRiver Media pro 1 year ago
Yes, Canon does listen, but unfortunately takes them extremely long to do so. 24p/25p is finally being released for the 5D2 on the 16th this month, which will be about 16 months of waiting and complaining about not having it. But alas, better now than never, as Canon has no obligation to do so, other than being ahead of the competition. Stupid marketing tactics!

  • Chas B 1 year ago
A Marco my friend, be happy they have done it at all, if it was Sony or any other company they would have told us your SOL, wait and buy a new camera... So lets thank them
  • OneRiver Media pro 1 year ago
Oh don't get me wrong, I completely agree. As stated, better now than never! It's just frustrating when you need 24p for a specific shoot that the 5D2 would shine on, but either can't shoot with it or resort to overcranking/interpolation tactics to get it to 24p. But luckily, those days will soon be over! Woohoo! =)
