I visited OccupyLA on Saturday, October 15, not knowing what to expect. I was totally blown away by the spirit and diversity of thousands of human beings coming together to demonstrate peacefully and creatively against the systemic exploitation of the international public by corrupt corporations. I decided to participate in my own little way by documenting what I saw.

Credit goes to friends and collaborators Rebecca Berdel and Carl Sondrol for the creation of an original OWS bumper at the end of the video. :)

Stay tuned, as we hope to make more in the coming weeks and months!

Lovely work! The footage, cuts, colors, and music go so well together. :D

Mind if I know what lens/lenses you used? Especially for the quick shots at 1:48 to 1:49.

That's wonderful! I did the same thing on October 8 down at City Hall. Our films are totally different of course. Very interesting. I like what you do with your colors and the rhythm of the film. It's excellent. Best to you.
  • Angeline Gragasin plus 4 months ago
OCCUPY MEDIA! Thanks Alessandro. Will check out your video, wish I could have been there on the 8th! Maybe I'll see you at OccupyLA soon...?
  • Alessandro Cima plus 4 months ago
I will probably be there this Saturday. I think there's a march scheduled for noon. That might be interesting. But I'm very hard to find. I tend to be uncomfortable in crowds, so I hide behind my camera and stay quite low to the ground. If you see someone filming low, that's probably going to be me. And you should always sneak up from behind so that you don't ruin my shot!

Haven't made it back since the 15th, but would like to return to gather more footage. Have you been back? What's your experience been?
  • Alessandro Cima plus 3 months ago
No, I did not get there after all. I'm a bit fed up with crowds. They tire me quickly. I'm a pathetically bad protester. Always looking for the hotdog cart. I'm heading out to the industrial wasteland of Sherman Way blvd. in the Valley this weekend to shoot a ridiculous idea I have. Crowds would be most unwelcome. But I'll probably get beaten up by some auto mechanics when I try to infiltrate their garages! Seriously! I can't wait. I'm going to wear my running shoes.

I was terribly disappointed to see a picture of President Obama with a “Hitler Moustache” again. I was hoping that the Occupy Movement was beyond “Tea Party” vitriol. Right-Wing Media is already trying to paint the “OWS” as being Anti-Semitic Anti-Zionist racist; well is the Occupy Movement a racist movement? Is this the image that you really want to send out to the world? That the Occupy Movement is just as racist as the Tea Party? A picture of Obama with a “Hitler Moustache” is offensive to both the Jewish Community and the Black Community is this the message that Occupy wants to send out to the world? Hey, “we are all one” except Jews and Blacks aren’t really welcome? If you consider Health Care Reform such a “fascist” threat to the American way of life then promote the “public option” or “Single-Payer”, not HATE!
  • Angeline Gragasin plus 4 months ago
Pat, any one image is not representative of the global Occupy Movement. I tried to convey this by cramming as many different images as I could into the span of one 2-minute video.

I would also appreciate if you could please distinguish between the views of the person who made that particular sign (or your interpretation of it), and my own, as the filmmaker who documented it. Just because I've included the image alongside scores of others does not mean I endorse it. It's not as if I made a video *about* the Hitler-Obama sign. I made a video about the thousands of people I saw at OccupyLA on October 15th. That sign was one of literally thousands. Official reports are that attendance was upwards of 15K.

Nonetheless, I appreciate your comments and am happy to see so many citizens actively participating in the movement by staying informed and engaging in thoughtful discussion. :)

That image was created by Lyndon LaRouche fanatics and they bring that out all the time to simply shock people into some sort of engagement. LaRouche is a crazy extremist candidate that has been running for president in every election since 1976. This is the only way they can get attention. Don't give it any serious consideration and move on. It's not worth the time.

Btw, I thought this video was spectacular. I'd love to see more media like this come out of the #ows movement.

Pat, while I certainly do feel the same way inasmuch as I find that image offensive--and, perhaps more relevantly, absolutely not politically useful for the Occupy movement but in fact harmful-- I stand with Angeline on the nature of a documentarian's work. Her goal here is, I believe, to capture an environment that contains a population with a diverse set of opinions, ideologies, and political goals. In my experience, Occupy includes moderates, liberals, communists, anarchists, Christians, Orthodox Jews, immigrants,... you see my point. There are many conflicting viewpoints represented at Occupy, and thus the same is true of Angeline's video. If there had been counter-protesters, I imagine Angeline would have documented their signs as well. This is not intended as an encapsulation of Angeline's (or any one individual's) personal politics. That sign sure does suck, though.

Great work as always, Angie! This reminds me, I need to upload my OWS photos...

Look, believe you me, I am all about the whole "Freedom of Speech" thing, I am not interested in squelching anyone's voice, and I have been following / supporting this Global Movement since Tunisia. However, images do matter, this very image is still being used by Left-Wing propagandist to paint the Tea Party as being racist and it worked, changing public opinion negatively against the Tea Party. So don't be surprised if Right-Wing Media starts using your video as propaganda against the Occupy movement. So whose side are you on?
  • Angeline Gragasin plus 4 months ago
    I don't believe in censorship.

Thanks for posting your opinion on this controversial image. This is exactly why I included it.

But please do not accuse me of supporting "the wrong side" by documenting and sharing this image - again, one of many.

Your speculations about future interpretations of my video are just that - speculative. And I appreciate the warning, but I don't think that reason enough to omit the image from the video. I would prefer to risk the video being co-opted by Right and Left-wing propagandists alike if that means it succeeds in provoking these very same discussions that you and I are having right now.

I believe conversation is productive. Censorship is not.

Believe you me, if this was The KKK or the Westboro Baptist Church aligning themselves with the Occupy Wall Street Protester ranks, you would be singing a completely different tune right now. Regarding “Speculations”: One thing more that you should consider is that if one of the people in this video gets busted by the police for protesting, the prosecutor will be freezing on that image in your video to sway the jury against them. I have been voting non-partisan for a long time now and I do agree that there are “lunatic fringes” in most populist movements. And I’m not trying to CENSOR anyone or anything. With my comments I have just been stating my negative reaction to your film that is all, nothing more nothing less. All I can remember or took away from your film is that one image. Message received!

BTW – if you truly are in earnest about being a documentarian, then you would have interviewed the “Obama with a Hitler Moustache” sign people to see if they are in fact racists or if they feel that that image is a racist image.

Great work Angeline - it sheds a new light onto a movement that is being portrayed in a very different way by especially the American corporate media. I feel it's a little more differentiated in Europe, but nevertheless they are less sympathetic and rarely manage to convey such an image of diversity.

I was also shocked to see that there are idiots in every crowd. Displaying a sign with Barack Obama wearing a Hitler moustache downplays all of the Nazi's atrocities while showing a massive lack of historical knowledge at the same time. And above all that, it is of course simply a very twisted pun at Obama by a right-wing group that will use absolutely every dirty trick at their disposal to demonize their counterparts.

I feel Angeline was right to include this as it can be seen as a little counterbalance to an otherwise mainly 'happy' film that is arguably very sympathetic to the Occupy movement.

Calling such a film a documentary means that it should hold up for an analysis of the balance of its content, but that's hard to judge not having been there. As a documentary filmmaker I know for myself that staying true to a story is a daunting task, because with every shot, every angle, every cut and especially everything you decide not to show, you are influencing the story - no matter if you intend to or not. There is no such thing as a balanced documentary, it can only be tried to show all aspects on a story. And I hope that's what Angeline tried to do.

Hey Nino! Thanks for your response. Forgive me for not responding sooner, but I actually took a lot of your comments to heart and focused addressing them in this post I did for Dan's blog: dslrnewsshooter.com/2011/10/31/occupy-la-mixing-politics-docu-style-citizen-journalism-and-dslr-video/

I hope this clarifies my motivation and creative process a little better. But thanks for taking the time to watch and leave some very thoughtful comments. I appreciate it. :)

I think you did a great job Angeline. I was briefly at Occupy DC whilst passing through DC. I think it is a smaller protest than the one you were at in LA. I can attest that your film reflects very well the atmosphere and diversity of the protestors.
