OCCUPY: Los Angeles
I visited OccupyLA on Saturday, October 15, not knowing what to expect. I was totally blown away by the spirit and diversity of thousands of human beings coming together to demonstrate peacefully and creatively against the systemic exploitation of the international public by corrupt corporations. I decided to participate in my own little way by documenting what I saw.
Credit goes to friends and collaborators Rebecca Berdel and Carl Sondrol for the creation of an original OWS bumper at the end of the video. :)
Stay tuned, as we hope to make more in the coming weeks and months!

Mind if I know what lens/lenses you used? Especially for the quick shots at 1:48 to 1:49.
I would also appreciate if you could please distinguish between the views of the person who made that particular sign (or your interpretation of it), and my own, as the filmmaker who documented it. Just because I've included the image alongside scores of others does not mean I endorse it. It's not as if I made a video *about* the Hitler-Obama sign. I made a video about the thousands of people I saw at OccupyLA on October 15th. That sign was one of literally thousands. Official reports are that attendance was upwards of 15K.
Nonetheless, I appreciate your comments and am happy to see so many citizens actively participating in the movement by staying informed and engaging in thoughtful discussion. :)
Btw, I thought this video was spectacular. I'd love to see more media like this come out of the #ows movement.
Great work as always, Angie! This reminds me, I need to upload my OWS photos...
Thanks for posting your opinion on this controversial image. This is exactly why I included it.
But please do not accuse me of supporting "the wrong side" by documenting and sharing this image - again, one of many.
Your speculations about future interpretations of my video are just that - speculative. And I appreciate the warning, but I don't think that reason enough to omit the image from the video. I would prefer to risk the video being co-opted by Right and Left-wing propagandists alike if that means it succeeds in provoking these very same discussions that you and I are having right now.
I believe conversation is productive. Censorship is not.
that's all there is to it
great video angeline x
BTW – if you truly are in earnest about being a documentarian, then you would have interviewed the “Obama with a Hitler Moustache” sign people to see if they are in fact racists or if they feel that that image is a racist image.
I was also shocked to see that there are idiots in every crowd. Displaying a sign with Barack Obama wearing a Hitler moustache downplays all of the Nazi's atrocities while showing a massive lack of historical knowledge at the same time. And above all that, it is of course simply a very twisted pun at Obama by a right-wing group that will use absolutely every dirty trick at their disposal to demonize their counterparts.
I feel Angeline was right to include this as it can be seen as a little counterbalance to an otherwise mainly 'happy' film that is arguably very sympathetic to the Occupy movement.
Calling such a film a documentary means that it should hold up for an analysis of the balance of its content, but that's hard to judge not having been there. As a documentary filmmaker I know for myself that staying true to a story is a daunting task, because with every shot, every angle, every cut and especially everything you decide not to show, you are influencing the story - no matter if you intend to or not. There is no such thing as a balanced documentary, it can only be tried to show all aspects on a story. And I hope that's what Angeline tried to do.
I hope this clarifies my motivation and creative process a little better. But thanks for taking the time to watch and leave some very thoughtful comments. I appreciate it. :)
Keep it on!
