This is a quick 3 minute walkthrough of installing the latest (October 2011) version of Magic Lantern for Canon DSLRs. The link to follow, bookmark, and download from is:

magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Unified

With these more recent versions you DO NOT have to go through the process of making cards bootable, because what you place on the card does that for you now. This makes it super easy for anyone with a card reader to install and benefit from. This unified build works on the Canon 50d, 60d, 550d (shown in the video, aka T2i), and 600d. The 5d mkII also has a build, but it is different from the one shown in this video.

Make sure you also read the instructions and manual that are in the downloaded zip package. If you are running an old Canon firmware you will likely need to update that first.

Apologies for the nasty looking out of focus Flip cam footage, but you get the idea.

Huge thanks to Alex for making this tool so easy to use and useful.

This is great stuff...serious guys 60D hack longer than 12mins...time-lapse intervalometer, zoom box for focus + many more this is nuts..I really really wanted these features. This is so awesome and also a huge thanks to the guys behind the software. You guys rock.

I'm with you dude, it's amazing the control you have with these cameras with this software added to it.

Just tried it and it worked good. Had to be on firmware 1.1.0 on my 60D BTW to work. Also managed to get 1.4 CBR on Sandisk Extreme 30 Mbps working, anything higher crashes. Just curious, have you noticed any improvement with CBR at 3.0.
  • Chadwick Shoults 4 months ago
I haven't pushed the data rate to 3 yet, but might give it a shot this week. I'll let you know.

  • At around 3:05 you say "you have to do it for each card".
I don't think this is true.
I think you just have to put Magic Lantern on each card you want to use magic lantern with.
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
I think you have to do the 'firmware update' process 1x per card. This will make the card bootable. If however you make the card bootable via terminal or another computer app, then you could just run the autexec file and be good to go - so long as the diskboot flag has been enabled in camera already.
  •
  • Huh. Sure enough. How do you make a card bootable via computer?
I thought the diskboot flag was in the camera, so I'm not sure how it knows the difference between cards that have been firmware updated and those that have not.....
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
There use to be a make bootable shell script you could run using terminal on a mac and a couple other little apps to make sd cards bootable. The greatest thing about these newer versions is you don't need to do that anymore.

It use to be a 2 step process, first enable diskboot 1x on camera and then make cards bootable and load the autexec.bin file on each card. Now its as simple as loading the files up and shooting some video.
  •
  • Wait....you just said you needed to "do the 'firmware update' process 1x per card."
And I just loaded an unzipped ML folder (October 21) onto an SD card, and nothing happened....
...so it wasn't as simple as loading the files up....

hey mate can you please let me know what i have to do to put this on another card please, do i do it all again or do i miss steps out. plz reply thank you :)
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
Yes, for each newly pre-magic lantern card - you need to do these steps for each card. After that you only need to do updates to the autexec file as new versions are released. You can format the card after and retain magic lantern - this is a newer feature.

I followed your instructions on my T2i but I dont get a green screen at all. As soon I ask to update the firmware another screen that says "updating firmware" pops up. I waited for a while, and then turned it off, the red light would still be blinking even with the camera off. I had to remove the battery to be able to turn the camera on, and there was no ML on it. Do you know what would be the issue?
  • VIIHills|Films™ plus 3 months ago
ive just had the exact same issue on my new card
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
What version of the Canon firmware are you running? It might be that you are still on the old one (I think it was 1.8). Double check that you are first on the 1.9 I believe which is the latest and last canon firmware before using ML.
  • This is very likely a firmware issue, maybe you should add this to the text below the video
  • Stephanie Valentin 3 months ago
Yeah it's 1.8! I'll do the update then! Thanks!
  • mikey Hanrahan 2 months ago
i have 1.9 and i still dont see the green screen

Great tutorial! You mentioned that I can format the card and retain Magic Lantern. Does it make a difference whether it is a low-level format or a standard format, and is there a specific, best way to go about formatting a ML card?
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
Great question. I'm not sure at the moment without my camera in front of me. I do believe you can do a low level format and still retain ML though.

When you go to format there is a little indicator to let you know if you want to keep or lose ML from the card. I think this is toggled with the Q button, but will need to reference the manual or camera to be sure.

    Hi Chadwick,
I'm buying a used t2i to add as a second camera to my 7D. The 7D has Cinestyle loaded on it. I want to match the t2i to it. Can the t2i run Magic Lantern, and have Cinestyle installed as a picture style at the same time? Your video mentioned I have to clear the t2i's settings...how would this work? or can it.

    Thanks.
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
    Hi there,
T2i is a great compliment to 7D. Yes you can use cinestyle on both. The reason for clearing the settings is to avoid any hiccups in the initial install. I put cinestyle back on my camera after doing the first install and it works great.

I like to use LUT buddy from red giant with the LUT that comes with cinestyle to start working right away in FCP.

The only big video difference in T2i vs. 7D is the higher ISO noise performance. It is about a stop difference in quality of noise per ISO. 640 7D looks like 320 T2i etc...

    Hi guys!
I have a T3i (eos 600D) but ML doesn't work with this installation guide. Probably I'm doing something wrong. Can someone help me?
After installation, the interface is a mixture of Canon & ML...
    Thanks!
  • Chadwick Shoults 3 months ago
I don't have a T3i to test with, but on the T2i with magic lantern installed it is a mixture of Canon and ML. You get the best of both worlds. The trashcan button accesses specific ML functions.

Saved my day ! Nice tutorial.
First it would not work, found out it's crucial to have the newest Firmware (EOS 500D Firmware 1.1.1) then it works like a charm.

Another workaround I found; Since I do not have a card reader, i just used my hero gopro cam with USB cable as a card-reader, works.

Now I can't wait to use the magic :-)

Help! I have a new T2i with the latest firmware - 1.0.9 installed out of the box. I've tried this procedure multiple times with 2 difference SD cards to no avail. I get the black screen with flashing red light. Any suggestions?
  • Daniel Wieser 1 month ago
Check on the canon website if you realy have the newest firmware. Had the same prob like you,a fter imstalling the newest, 1.1.1. For eos 500d (which i believe is the t2 in the us market) it worked like a charm.

Having lots of fun with the ML. One question i still got: anyone knows where the 'q' button would be on the 500d?? It would set the settings in video to auto, but i cant find it..

    Will this void my warrany?
  • Palf 3 weeks ago
It only voids your warranty if they catch you using it. If you cleared the SD card (memory card) of all evidence of ML, canon will never know.

Curious, why do you need to remove the battery grip to do the install? I can't find my original door to close up the camera without the grip. Will having the grip damage the camera?
  • Chadwick Shoults 2 weeks ago
I 'think' you would be ok with the grip on. The reason Alex suggests removing it is because its one less variable to cause it not to load up properly.

I tried to instal ML onto my Kiss X5 with firmware 1.0.1 for several times with different SDHC cards. It's just the same problem of black screen and blinking red lights. I updated the firmware from the canon website and it was now version 1.0.2. ML still cannot be installed. Please help.
