Just do a Google search for "Light Leaks After Effects", and his blog will come up. Thanks so much for sharing them, Jesse!

Great shots at the wind farm Douglas! Nice and many different angles of shooting! Added to vimeo.com/channels/hdtime and vimeo.com/channels/1341

Thank you so much! I check out the Timelapse channel all the time-- it's one of the reasons I was inspired to make this thing. :) I'm super flattered to be included! Thanks again!

Superbly done. Everything from the composition, color grading, pacing and variety of angles. It all comes together. Great stuff!
  • Douglas Koke plus 4 months ago
That's unbelievably nice of you to say-- I really appreciate it. I've mostly worked in web and interactive design, and all this film stuff is new to me, so the encouragement means a lot. Thank you! I checked out your demo reel -- you've got some serious talent, David!

Right now, I'm working on using some footage I shot of the radio telescopes at the Very Large Array as a motion-tracking exercise. I may hit you up for some advice. :)

Thanks again for the kind words-- that totally made my night!

  • some really great shots man! I just wish I didn't see the BMW logo, haha. Really liked the blacks of the cows.:)
  • Douglas Koke plus 4 months ago
Haha! Thanks! Well, if it makes you feel better, I used a couple of my vacation days to drive to New Mexico, and ended up catching a flat tire in the middle of NOWHERE... so you can take comfort in the fact that I got a little Karmic payback for my vanity shots of that dopey blue propeller logo. :)

To be totally honest, the super-crushed blacks in those cows were kind of an accident. I wished I could've retained a little more detail. Even with ND, I had a hard time keeping the skies from being blown-out, so I pushed the blacks to compensate for my sh*tty technique. :) I'd love to take credit, but it was just dumb luck.

This is an amazing video! I absolutely LOVE everything about this. The song choice is amazing as well. Calm, instrumental music like this is my favorite. Has such a nice, organic sound to it. If you like that, then I believe you'll really like this band:

The song is called Baleen Morning by the talented band Balmorhea -

Thanks! I'm pretty obsessed with music of all kinds, but I'm a big fan of the moody instrumental stuff too.

I have to admit, that Drew Barefoot tune does pretty much all the emotional heavy-lifting in the video. It's such a gentle, plaintive piece of music; totally sets the tone I was going for. I'm proud of the visuals, but I know they wouldn't be half as effective if I wasn't able to piggyback on such a pretty song. :)

I'll definitely check out that band. I always like hearing new stuff! Thanks!

Awesome shots Doug! What model timer do you use?
  • Douglas Koke plus 3 months ago
    Thanks!

For the Canon, my timer's a Vello "Shutterboss" from B&H.
I have another one labled "Shoot" that's basically the exact same thing, bought from Amazon.

The GoPro has an intervalometer built in.

what picture profile did you use on this one?
  • Douglas Koke plus 2 months ago
I used the Neutral profile, with the sharpness, saturation and contrast cranked almost all the way down. It was a little harder to pull focus with an image so flat, but it left me a lot more latitude to mess around with grading.

I downloaded the Technicolor and Marvel cine profiles a little while ago, and am hoping to play around with them a bit over the Holidays. They look pretty promising.

I thought your using Canons Neutral profile! I agree with your assessment it does get harder pulling focus with those setting. I heard over the interweb that Magic lantern helps a bit on that regards but you got the Technicolor and the Marvels Cine then your fine then. I have them too, I use Marvels Cine for quick edits. Technicolor there is an extra step which you can omit, the LUT Curve...

I got the new Cinema Picture profile so far so good, it claims alot advantages, but you have to pay for it $19 bucks. I am still testing it. Anyways, I am going to feature your video on my Channel "DSLR Picture Style Central"... I know I just started that channel since nobody got them in this format yet and I've been looking back and forth with all these profiles might as well combine all of them haha... Thanks Douglas!
  • Douglas Koke plus 2 months ago
    Cool! Thanks, Jeff!

I was thinkin' about snagging the Cinema profile from CinePlus too-- I really like the examples I've seen online. Curious to hear what you think about it.

I'll probably end up using the Marvel profile really similarly to what you're doin'-- for footage that I want to be able to share and edit quickly. Seems like it'd be really handy for the times when you need something that looks relatively impressive straight out of the camera.

Right now, I'm goofing around with a project that's pretty heavily influenced by Rob Chiu. That guy dials in some amazing film looks. Tryin' to figure out how he gets the blacks so rich, without a getting a bunch of nasty posterizing in skin tones along with 'em.

Always somethin' new to learn, isn't there?

I'll definitely check out your channel -- I think that's a great idea! I bet a lot of people, myself included, would find something like that really helpful. Nice goin'!

Yeah, so far Cinema CinePlus looks good. I am still playing with it. It is sharp, I recommend using this with polarizer or ND filters. I'll let you know more later on.

Marvels Cine is great addition to my arsenal, I use Technicolor cinestyle when time is not an issue.

You mention Rob Chiu, I looked at some of his work wow, he's good. I like his work. How to get good blacks? Use variable ND filters and or Polarizers, use Magic Lantern firmware because it has Zebras and peaks on it also help pulling focus. Magic Lantern will help you visually see your highlights and exposure better. It's all about exposure they say. Calibrate your monitors every two weeks ;) When color grading skin tone the key is the color orange because our skin falls on that range. Use Magic Bullet Colorista, awesome plug-in! For quick edit use Magic Bullet Mojo or Looks! I like Magic Bullet Looks better has a more pro feel to it.

Yup, My freshly made channel is up, I even have a group design for DSLR picture styles... Now I am in deep hahaha. In hopes I can contribute to all and help others and myself to learn even more. I am a broadcast engineer by trade and recently I've been diving into the creative side of things doing films and photography on the side for the hell it... Well, let's have fun at it shall we? Hehehe Have a nice day Douglas! ;)

You were spot-on about Colorista! I used it on my VLA video that I just posted, and it works amazingly well.

I had some pretty severe color casting in some of the shots, and that plugin *completely* brought them into line with the ones that had proper white balance.

Awesome tool! Thanks for the tip! It saved my whole edit!

Hi there Douglas, just a quick question, how did you get the smooth follow focus at :32 mark?
    Thanks!
  • Douglas Koke plus 3 weeks ago
Well, I just bought a D|Focus that showed up in the mail TODAY, so from now on, I'll use that. :)

But, for the one you see in the video, I just turned the focus ring on the lens by hand, and you can see a little vibration.

The rack focusing I do with my Sigma 30mm looks pretty decent, but both of my Canon lenses breathe when I pull focus, with the magnification changing slightly when I turn the ring, which is a bummer.
You can definitely see that movement in the shot where the camera is making an upwards crane move and focusing at the same time. You'll notice the image rotates a little and the scale jumps a bit.
  • JJ Fabre plus 2 weeks ago
Breathe, haha I like that term. Yeah, that's really annoying, sometimes it moves your framing.
Anyway thanks for the response! :)

looks great - Most of those are GE turbines - the ones I work on! The video captures the reliability and steadiness of these things. They just keep turning... day, night, storms, snow; just as long as the wind blows. I always thought they were hypnotic to watch, and you video captures that. I've got to get a DSLR...
