יהודה אשלג והתיאטרון הברכטיאני 2. בדרך כלל מתחשק לי לראות את עצמי דומה שהרגל הימינית שלי היא ימינית ואילו הרגל השמאלית שלי היא שמאלית. כלומר הצד החסידי מול הצד החילוני המוקדש לתיאטרון המוסיקלי הנסיוני, ושני הצדדים האלו מתיחסים זה לזה ממרחק די גדול. אבל חווית הביטי את עצמי בוידאו הזה מעודד אותי לקוות כי יתכן ששני הצדדים הם חלקי בן אדם אחד. האיש ההוא בוידאו מתחיל את ההופעה שלו בתור מטיף חסידי ומסים בתור שחקן השר ורוקד, ובאמצע הוא מערבב שני הצדדים עד כדי כך שאי-אפשר להבחין עם אנחנו צופים ברב או בשחקן. ולמעשה, ככה להיראות מאוד מוצא חן בעיני!

YEHUDA ASHLAG & MABOU MINES truth search. i like to think of myself as having a right foot that's rightist and a left foot that's leftist, a hassidic zionist side versus an avant garde secular musical theater side, and the two sides have usually been only distantly related in my personality. but watching myself as a sort of "rebbe of the avant garde" in this video shows me that perhaps it is possible that the two feet are part of the same person after all. that dude up there starts off his act as a hassidic preacher and ends his act doing a song and dance version of the "mocking your forms" post-brechtian theater training exercise. in the middle of his act he flips back and forth like some sort of hybrid molecular structure, so you never know if you are watching the rebbe or the ham. it's not shlomo carlebach, who's got the performer welded into his rebbe number, and neither is it some stand up jewish comedian. rather, it's the totally committed hassidic rebbe world and the totally committed post-brechtian theater world gyrating together in some sort of kinky flip-flop. and as a matter of fact i like it that way!

i want to acknowledge my gratitude to yedidah cohn, auther of "tapestry of the soul, the introduction to the zohar by rabbi yehuda lev ashlag", who has done a lovely job of presenting in both english and hebrew some key elements of rabbi yehuda ashlag's kabbalistic system. although she herself might not agree with my conclusions, reading her book has helped me to understand that the work of rabbi ashlag falls primarily within the dialectical tradition of of the aristotle/maimonides/leibniz/chabad sort - in contrast to the system of rabbi nachman of breslav which embodies the opposing plato/philo/crescas/bacon/hamann branch of dialectical thinking. in my work as gestalt therapist and theater writer/director i draw inspiration from both camps of jewish dialectical whizardry, the aristotelians and the platonists, according to the therapeutic needs of my clients and according to my own creative whimsy. hence in this series of videos and essays which i am conjuring up you see these very different hassidic and theatrical traditions juxtaposed, as parts of an overall intellectual, spiritual and artistic truth search. me as don quixote and you as my companion sancho, together we are as blind men groping in the dark in our shared attempt to fathom the complete elephant.
