TheCenterCannotHold is a collaborative work co-choreographed by dance artists Kim Jones and Duane Cyrus. We are both native New Yorkers and former members of the Martha Graham Dance Company. We currently teach in the UNC system as professors of Dance; (Jones as Assistant Professor at UNC Charlotte and Cyrus as Associate Professor at UNC Greensboro). This collaboration seeks to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of North Carolina by creating a dialogue that reaches across our two campuses and provides space for us as mature dancers in performance. We invite you to see TheCenterCannotHold as a landscape influenced by our mutual experiences within the Graham aesthetic of theatrical dance performance. The premiere of TheCenterCannotHold takes place ten years after the 9/11 tragedies.
As first-hand witnesses to the 9/11 disaster in New York City--a moment in history that affected the entire world---we created TheCenterCannotHold about the unanswerable confusion and fear during that time, as well as to address the humanity that emerged in the moments following such large scale, inhumane destruction.
