Arts North West is a community organisation in New South Wales that delivers a range of arts based intervention programs with the aim of improving the overall well-being of marginalised young people. In 2006, they received funding from the Foundation to implement ‘Message in a Bottle’, an alcohol prevention program for young people in north-eastern New South Wales. The target region has a culture of alcohol misuse among young people, and the project aimed to increase awareness about alcohol misuse and the impact it has on relationships, health and well-being, educational attainment, skill development, and career opportunities. Arts North West coordinated a series of intervention workshops throughout these communities over a period of twenty months. The workshops engaged local artists, marginalised young people, peer mentors, and community based drug and alcohol support workers from relevant referral agencies such as the Department of Child Services. The workshops were based around a range of art forms including drama, dance, circus arts, music, film, graffiti and aerosol art, digital storytelling, and photography that engaged participants in expressing themselves about issues relating to alcohol misuse in their community.
