28. New Zacuto Zuca for HV30
At only 9lbs the Zuca is the ultimate system for the HV20/30/40 class of camera.

    Very well done fella's. Wow.

Minus the camera itself, how much are we talkin' for THAT exact Zuca setup?
  • leepback 10 months ago
    ditto

  • filmtriks plus 10 months ago
    Wow guys!

  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 10 months ago
Perfect, thank you! Looks very impressive.

Do you sell this rig btw? If yes, how much?

And you are right, there is a huge sub-culture about the HV series, as they were the first consumer cameras to support 24p (even if it was just PF24), and be a bit more serious than the rest of the consumer cameras of the time. This has lead to a huge community online. Some of the most successful channels/groups here on Vimeo are HV-related too.

Oh great, yet another thing to make me wish I had money.

Seriously, though, this is pretty cool. And it's neat to see guys who presumably have access to the best of the best cameras getting excited over a little HV30.
  •
  • Borek Lupomesky 10 months ago
Wow, that looks serious. I guess its anywhere 5x to 10x the price of the camera itself.
  •
  • Space Cherry Films 10 months ago
how much are you guys selling this rig for?
  •
  • Brad C plus 10 months ago
Steve, I think you will find that some of us (in this sub culture of small HD cams that pack a punch) would rather have the Zuca setup than a prosumer style camera.

If you guys can honestly keep this competitively priced, these setups will sell like hotcakes.

    Jens is a genius.

Not to pester, but like the rest of us...again I stress...whats the cost of the whole rig shown minus the cam itself? (matte, follow, rails, pads, monitor, handles, etc.)
  •
  • OK, be gentle.
There is a lot of stuff on this package (some wouldn’t even want all of it) so here is how it breaks down:
    Zacuto Support Kit: $1183
Matte box with universal donut: $890
    Follow Focus $1110
Handgrip system (works as handle or handgrip): $399
Arm kit (only needed if using on-board monitor) $451

I know it’s not cheap and we didn’t really create it thinking that people would buy it. We really just wanted to see if we can adapt our widgets to every camera out there.

    Steve
  • Brad C plus 10 months ago
Wow. I knew it wouldn't be cheap but dang. haha

Steve, I know it's great stuff man but I think it's too rich for the blood of the intended market.

Still well thought out for a "dream setup".
  • Alex Stone plus 10 months ago
Whoa... why on earth are you guys charging so much for what can be purchased and assembled for under $600??
  •
  • Alex Everingham 10 months ago
Can i have a link to the monitor they used?
  • It's an IKAN 5" monitor, not available yet, soon. check our store in the next few weeks. store.zacuto.com
  • Alex Everingham 10 months ago
cool, i thought i was going crazy.
  • kruzer 9 months ago
sure hope the 5" monitor is better than the 7" was.
It was worthless, and don;t even think that you can focus with that one!
    You can't.
BTW, Ikan-like monitors, (same company makes it)same specs are 1/2 price elsewhere. Am not going to give links to it... you can searh and find it :)

  • paramon plus 10 months ago
    5K setup for a $600 camera, c'mon guys :)
  • Brad C plus 10 months ago
Ditto. Granted...it's only $4,033. But still....ditto on the premise.
  • Alex Everingham 10 months ago
Yeah it's not really for us cheap/broke people.
  • paramon plus 10 months ago
I no cheap, and no broke, but to pay for the support gear more than my camera cost is just silly,
    :)
  •
  • Head Shot 10 months ago
Throw in a Steadicam Flyer with arm and vest- that would be ultimate

    Pimp my cam guys
  •
  • The matte box and follow focus are kind of a given price wise, sure you could maybe find them for a few hundred dollars cheaper but they are going to be $1500 for the pair no matter how you get it.

I actually think the entire support system for $1183 is not two outragous. A matte box and follow focus are investments that not absolutely necessary, and even fair ones are going to be more then the cost of the camera.

The question is what kind of price point would you want to get all of this stuff. I get the camera is $600, but there seems to be a going model that all of your accessories should be less then the cost of the camera. I think you could understand how that would never be possible.

Again, it was a fun experiment.
  • Brad C plus 10 months ago
    Steve,

I completely understand what you're saying. I don't think anybody is really questioning (or at least I'm not) the price of everything because A- most of the parts are the same cost across the board henceforth it wouldn't be cheaper just for a smaller cam and B- the QUALITY of Zacuto parts is extremely high. You get what you pay for.

I think for some, they don't understand what this stuff really costs, and it's too steep for this market. Like I said, it's a "dream setup" for someone who had piles of cash to blow.

    haha
  • Thank you Brad. There are a lot of components in this package and we have not even talked about the price of the DOF adapter. But if you are looking for an inexpensive mount to do great handheld, check out this: zacutoimages.com/p1046814736
  • Alex Everingham 10 months ago
I dunno, indifocus is pretty cheap for everything. They aren't the same quality you guys are (or the service) but they aren't bad either.
  • Alex Everingham 10 months ago
Although i must say, the Zuca is one of the coolest rigs i've seen and just by looking at it, i can tell how rock steady it is.
  • Ukat 10 months ago
WHAT DOF make /model is used in this Zuca demo?
Be keen for a price tag too.
  •
  • MAINJUNE KIM 10 months ago
    That's too awesome!!!

    Looks very comfortable
  •
  • Michael Schocker 10 months ago
How about a few minutes of footage?
  •
  • Alex Stone plus 10 months ago
This is rickdiculous (NOT in a good way)

    Twoneil DoF Adapter is $200
    twoneil.com/products.html

Shrigg Rig with handles and shoulder mount is $270
    indifocus.com/products_indirailspro.htm

You can use a mounted headrest monitor for the preview monitor (usually around $100 for a decent one off of Amazon)

Assuming you even need a matte box, you can obtain one for about $500 off of B&H or even cheaper on CL or eBay if you poke around. I suspect most users here, using HV30s (myself included) will be happy with a simple lens hood, which can be obtained for about $100 for a high end one that will attach to their 35mm lenses

So, all together, you're looking at $670 + shipping
  • Brad C plus 10 months ago
That's definitely the grassroots way of going about it and it would probably work well.

My Cokin filter holder with hood attachments is actually doing quite well for me on my Letus setup.
  • Alex Stone plus 10 months ago
You know, I haven't heard too much about the letus setups in all of my searches for 35mm DOF adapter info. It seems the DIY ones are holding up pretty well.

How do you like it? Does it have the vignetting issues that a lot of the static DIY models have?
  • Alex Everingham 10 months ago
I don't own a Letus, but i know they are great. I've never heard of someone who has been dissapointed.

Beeing an hv20 owner this Looks more than nice and fun, but which non pro could afford this?
D90 is my next step to big dof, but I'm still waiting for it to become cheaper.

    but again great work.
  • I completely understand. I hope I'm not upsetting anyone with this, if so, I can take this video down. Like I said we did it more for fun. I agree our parts are made for the Pro market, made in the USA, come a lifetime warranty even if the customer breaks it and we have unmatched customer service that you can read about on the web. Our products do not compare nor will they compete with Chinese made goods or costs.

Just so you know our parts work interchangable on all cameras so when you do get your D90 you will be able to use virtually this same setup on that kit as this kit.
  • Nicolas Bryant 10 months ago
No not upsetting me a bit (maybe frustration :) because it looks so fun :)
There is more to video than image and your setup is also about that :)
  •
  • Garnet Campbell 10 months ago
I like it, anytime people are designing cooler tools for making films we all win. There will always be those who can't afford certain price points but it should never stop or discourage the creators from creating. Keep up the great work Steve and team!
  •
  • Telemov 10 months ago
I can't afford that, but I'd sure like to try to make my own. Thanks for posting it! Very cool!

  • Bill Strehl 10 months ago
    Steve:

Thanks for putting the video together! As a HV20 owner I am always looking for better ways to utilize my existing gear and how best to mount it. Your video and the hot shoe mount was a great addition to the idea gene pool. How about a followup with a shotgun mike, Beachtek adapter and LitePanels Micro added to the rig?
  •
  • Bruce 10 months ago
good grief! Don't take the video down. Yikes. Amazing that equipment gurus with vision actually like the HV30 that much. Appreciate it a lot. I think people doing quasi feature stuff should form co ops to buy it -and then use as a group. One last thought, Steve - could you do a demo using the Zuco with the HV30 in various situations? And throw in a few low light environments to see if you can solve the HV low light issues. Thanks again...

Steve, I was wondering which camera you shot the promo for the Zuca on?
  • HVX200a

Great idea, how about I send the Zuca to you and you make that video?
  •
  • Bruce 10 months ago
Well, have a look at my bio/profile, Steve. I just put it up there. I would absolutely love to test your system. As I say in my profile - I think there is a wave coming and it is a big one. One that a person might actually be able to make a living on. (Having spent a lot of my life as a film cameraman and then as a director and producer of videos and doing the "feast or famine" thing it is time for a real lasting wave. Lost one house to a production recession. Been there done that.)

So - I am pumped by the looming wave of small cam production. And like you say - it is the "eye" that makes it. For the disciplined who know when a pan should stop, those who have film savvy - those small cams will overthrow empires and champion the cause of the disenfranchised - not to mention sell a ton of "stuff" online. LOL. You guys are doing exactly the right thing IMO.

Keep up the good work - and if you want to have me test your gizmo ;) send 'er along to beautiful downtown Canada and I will get 'er done. I have been waiting - and waiting - for the new Canons to come out to see what is up their sleeve this year. Hope they get this stuff on the shelf soon. best 2 ya! Bruce

P.S. I spent years cutting the top and bottom off my TV frame to make it "wide screen" now 16:9 is a reality. I can't believe it. COUNT ME IN!!!
  •
  • Brad C plus 10 months ago
I don't care what anybody says, it's a brilliant concept. I would much rather have this over any prosumer for the same price. Being able to run and gun, have killer DOF, and not kill your shoulder in the process is golden. I would love to have it for wedding videography.

The only thing I would change is the camera itself. I have nothing against HV20/30/40's persay, but once I got the taste of solid state....I highly doubt I would ever change.
  • Hata Proof Films plus 9 months ago
Yea, HF100 is a nice choice, its virtually a HCSD based HV, and of course AVCHD instead of HDV. I have mine setup wit RedRock M2, Mico X Flip & rails for under 1800. They just had a significant price drop due to their new M2Encore

    I want it
  • Send me an email to steve@zacuto.com and I can send you a quotation. Also let me know what you want components you would like, Zuca, Cinemek DOF adapter, Monitor?
  •
  • Bruce 9 months ago
Another thought on this setup - all the camera setups I have seen with DFO adapters have the weight out front with the lens and adapter well in front of the cameraman's body. With the rails on yours, I am wondering if Jens could actually move the shoulder pad more forward so that the camera itself could sit back behind the shoulder - thus balancing the camera more front and back. I realize that the viewing screen would be closer, but maybe there is a solution for that, too? the point of my thinking is that for holding even a couple of pounds out from your body for 30 minutes can be a big deal on the arms. I see no reason for having the camera in front if the camera can be turned on and off. Thoughts?

  • Caleb plus 9 months ago
Wow. That's such an awesome piece of work. If only I had the cash for that sort of investment. Oh well, maybe in ten years. I love watching this video though!
  •
  • Iain plus 9 months ago
Yeah, this is probably the illest set up for a small HD cam. I've got the upside down set up, with the adapter, but I'm saving for some more bells and whistles. A follow focus is next I think, doing more focusing during shooting would be nice. You guys make some awesome products, gotta get me some someday.

  • Axel Schreiter 9 months ago
@Alex Stone. You are wrong. Starting with the headrest monitor. You can´t be too experienced if you believe you can judge focus with one of these. The Indie FollowFocus has been reviewed unfavorably before, you can´t go with second best for focus pulling. You know that professionals without autofocus and such small depth of field (even smaller than with a 35mm film camera!) work with an assistant, for good reason. You could build the whole support by yourself, the rails, handgrip and shoulderpad, some even succeeded in making quite good 35mm adapters, you could do without a mattebox first. Monitor and FollowFocus need to be extra good for such a setup. Excuse my poor English.
  • Alex. There is no right or wrong. This is just one possibility for an HV20. I think it's light, small and elegant. I am trying to come up with a viewfinder option but till I do, there are not lot of options for monitoing. steve

Please please please throw up some test footage if at all possible. I've been researching cameras for the past 2 months now, and i'm looking for an efficient way to spend 10k for a camera and equipment. The more I read and see, the better. Love all your other videos as well. Thank you for schooling the Youth ;)

Zucuto makes the coolest stuff, but i have to say the stuff is expensive, like the iphone zgrip is close to the same price as a iphone and if all i could afford is a $1200 camera id spend the money on a better camera before i get the zuca. Now the stuff you guys make for higher end stuff makes sense to me like the rigs for dslrs and ex3 now that stuff is worth the money although still i wish i could afford it.
