Perhaps the solution then is to build a streaming movie theater? Hey, why not?

This would be a great opportunity not only for the independent filmmaker, but also the movie industry too-- might be a bit of overhead, but worth the plunge, since the audience can connect with the content and provide feedback before shopping out for major release.

Now, of course, there will always be the films that just lose momentum right from the start -- can't help you there, maybe a rewrite?

I definitely need to know what you are shooting these promos with! PLEASE! LOL. Red??
  • 5 HVX200a's and 1 HVX200a with a Letus Elite and Zeiss ZF 35mm lens. Lit with one overhead softbox light with siders.

Lighting is great and even. If I can talk foot candles to you - remember those! LOL. How many footcandles do you think is on stage because really - that camera HVX200a
loves that level of light. Thanks for your reply earlier. Cheers.
  • I wasn't measuring footcandles, no light meter. But I agree, if anything shooting digital shy on the dark side because if you have any clipping it's going to scream VIDEO.

  • David, I'm the youngest there at 27, they are really all older then me, in there mid forties. I just look crappy for being in my 20's.

As far as filmmaking, I don't give a damn if I make a nickel, if I don't make the movie that is MINE.
It's an art-form to me. Is my art commercially viable?
I don't know but I'd rather sell toilet paper for money than treat my films like it.
  • Agreed Rick, this trailer is a bit out of context. Of course you go full bore on your film and make it everything it can be. But when you are not making your film I suggested that it would be a good idea to do some kind of commercial production to:
    1. improve you skills
    2. make a sustainable living in film

I found it interesting that many filmmakers I've talked to have day jobs that are not in film. I'm going to be pushing people hard to get day jobs in film because everytime you are behind a camera you learn and get better. This way you 2nd film will be that much better having made your mistakes on other peoples productions and not yours. The more work in general you do the sharper your skills get.

I absolutely agree. I do wedding videos on the side, and other stuff. I can be a whipping boy too. It's just knowing how and when to choose the battle, and when it's worth it.
If the client is putting 80 percent of the thought into the project, I'll lend my little bit of skill, or view, but I'll do what they ask. Then it's more of a trade, skill, etc...
If it's a project that I spend 14 hours of my own time a day thinking about, and dreaming about, then Katie bar the door because i'm not going to give an inch of concern about the money I may NOT make if i do it the way I want. Usually those projects consume the most mental time, but give the least in coin....
