Here's a film I made for the latest CGSociety challenge...the theme was to adapt an ancient myth to steampunk stylings. I chose the myth about the fountain of youth for my topic.

Tyson first of all congratulations, this is really a great little short film. There is a lot of energy and life in the film that gives an organic, fluid feel to the action.

The shots, the pacing, your simple but effective use of light and space, even your solid understanding of storytelling through minimal means, all served to draw me in instantly and kept my attention throughout.

I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed watching it and how I couldnt believe the previous comment about how this was similar to baginski's cathedral.

While there are some aesthetic similarities ( a man walks alone in a dark space holding a single light source ) the mood, the pacing, the themes, couldnt be more different.

By the time THIS film has finished its story, baginski's cathedral switches gears and the similarities end completely.

Personally I feel that your film is actually more effective in its narrative flow and ability to draw the audience in.

To diminish someone's obvious hard work, skill and artistry into a single negative comment I feel is really unfair and way off the mark. I still cant believe that you did this in only 3 months and all by yourself!

Anyway I've gone on this tirade long enough, keep doing what your doing man, your great at it!

Wooo!... TYSON!, this is AWESOME work! Tell me, what animation software did you use to make this video and how long did it take you? I've used POSER but I wise I could do work like that.

    Tyson,you did it again.Great movie.The lights,render and the mood, reminds me of Baginski's cathedral.Perhaps the torch stich..:D
  •
  • Tyson Ibele 9 months ago
Thanks guys! Ironically, I had no intention to mimic any part of "The Cathedral", although it's an interesting insight from those who noticed the similarities (guy holding torch visits strange place and transforms into the type of entity already stationed there). Thinking about it now, they are quite similar in theme! But that's purely coincidental.

    that was completely badass.

one of the things that immediately stood out to me was the motion of the animation. it's sharp and jerky in a great way. It unsettles you immediately.

    this is amazing Tyson...

The camera work is stunning... I'd be tempted to think that you shot this live, tracked the cameras and imported the data into 3d space- the movement is naturalistic and fluid.

    Really great work.
  • Tyson Ibele 9 months ago
Thanks mate....but nope, all the camera motion was hand-keyed with the help of 3dsmax noise controllers.

Absolutely gorgeous work! Other than the similarity of a guy + torch.. I don't see this at all like the Cathedral. Maybe Indiana Jones tho =P People should stop criticizing, and start embracing instead. Rock on- this is short film excellence!
