The German
Written & Directed by Nick Ryan
Starring Toby Kebbell and Christian Brassington
10 minute short film

A British fighter pilot pursues the german ace that shot down his friend across sky and country... with murder in mind. But he discovers it's not so easy to kill a man when you have to look them in the eye
This was funded by an Irish Film Board scheme called 'Short Cuts' and was shot in November 2007. The Budget was €70K, and was used entirely on the live action components of the film - leaving a grand total of ZERO for visual effects!
I completed all the visual effects shots, over 120 in total, entirely by myself. Dave Head modelled the aircraft (and truck), but I textured, lit, animated and composited the shots over a six month period in 2008.

With the internet how hard can it be to get it right, and by doing so honour those that fought for freedom.
I would have equally post the exact same comment if a film-maker showed an erroneous airline slamming into the twin towers.
No insults will ever change the respect I show to all who lost and gave of their lives, nor the memory of their deeds.
Lest we forget.
I won't insult you, but I think you are being overly sensitive, it's actually very hard to get a film made, let alone get details perfect.
And you'd be just as pathetic, trust me. It's a MOVIE.
Y'know, movie != documentary... shocking, huh?
Only a few German words but most of that isn't recognizable as german language.
Great job

PS. I'm IRISH!
"Battle of Britain" is one of my all time favorites, but this short film explores another dimension.
PS- Why was it called "The German" ?
One thing: I'm not sure but some of the sequences have wrong ratio (like around 3:00 on the pilot closeup). The character looks vertically deformed... Same for his mask, the filter in the foreground should have a round shape.
Conflict of humanity.
But beside that, the movie is just great. I really liked the change of pace in the storytelling and editing, how it slows down matching the main character feelings. Even coloring works very well, from the colder and hard lights of the skies slowly getting warmer and softer towards the end in the woods.
'The Hun is always in the sun "...
Thanks for the film.
Cheers,
Best regards from Germany.

Good story telling and fine acting, but the awesome VFX top everything!
Only the research on the German language could have been a bit more accurate: he says "Stell die Pistole weg!", which means "Stand up the gun" (makes no sense). He should have said "Leg die Pistole weg!", which means "put away the gun". But the acting shows clearly the message ("Please don't shoot me!"), so, no biggie ;).
And to give you some more constructive criticism: the build up in the two key moments (1. when he is deciding whether to shoot him or not, 2. when he is deciding whether to take the cigarette or not) is a tiny itsy bitsy too long...
But over all: Still Fantastic! I am blown away!
Great ending: Didn't know that about the Irish, got to love them for that.
Cheers
