    Dealing with value scales (greyscale) to dodge and burn also flattens the possible values for burning and dodging.

    Shading a colour with greyscale desaturates. There is always a colour cast applied to light and shade.

    Adding a gradient map to the layer will help that, but it's probably better to just duplicate the original, sit it above, and drop the opacity.

    Then you'll be able to use the sponge tool to evaluate the amount of saturation required to compensate for the natural light value shift.
