Footage from a winter hike above the clouds close to Einsiedeln, from the roof of a university building (ETH) in Zurich and from a hill near St. Gallen, all in Switzerland.
Shot with a Canon EOS 50D and the 400D (XTi), HDR with 3 brackets.
PS: Thanks for all the nice comments! The last scene was shot on Christmas Eve 2008. I was on the highest point of a hill and had to wait for about 40 minutes until I got out of the fog...
Here: magictimelapse.blogspot.com/2009/02/tutorial-how-to-make-hdr-time-lapse.html is a tutorial how to create an HDR timelapse.

Great collection of shots, very nice clouds! I like that you dont go overboard with the HDR like so many people do.
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
Thanks Andrew! I like HDR a lot, but only if it is not visible on the first glance...
  • Zed Chance 3 years ago
What do you mean by go overboard with HDR?
  • Courtnie Pruitt 2 years ago
Yeah... I'm with Zed. What do you mean?
  • Tony Leech plus 1 year ago
    This is stunning work, Michael!

My guess is that Andrew was referring to the very stylized HDR images that can be created in a program like Photomatix: hdrsoft.com/gallery/gallery.php?id=44&gid=0

Another example could also be an HDR time lapse piece I've done: vimeo.com/13031689

In both of those examples, the images take on a surreal feel. Michael's work here is much more realistic—closer to what our eyes would see if we were standing next to him while he shot these scenes. The HDR work is not readily apparent, and that, IMHO, is much more difficult to achieve.

    Excellent, excellent job, Michael!

Very nice indeed. Agree with Andrew, nice work with HDR without overdoing it :)
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
Thanks! Always easy with those buttons in photomatix...

Cool, I like the last scene the most...the one with the two trees on the left - great sky there!
  •
  • Poul Jensen 3 years ago
Agreed, the HDR footage I have seen so far has either been very artificial looking, had heavy flicker or both. Nice to see that it doesn't have to be that way. Regarding flicker, how much effort is it to avoid it/get rid of it?
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
GBDeflicker does a pretty good job actually! If you don't use the craziest settings in photomatix, there is also less flicker.

    very nice!
you should crop the tree part in a better way
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
Thanks, yes I know, but there is unfortunately the edge of the image. I did not take enough care when I took the series then...
  • Raffaele Mariotti plus 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure you could re-frame in the video application since the photos were taken in an higher resolution ;)
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
I thought you spoke about the tree in the last sequence, because that tree is on the very egde of the image :)
  • Raffaele Mariotti plus 3 years ago
yep, I'm talking about that one :)
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
Ok, if I send you an image from that series could you show me how to better crop it? I am eager to learn :)

Fantastic fog and cloud time-lapse. Like many on here, I like the last scene with the fog /clouds rolling to the left, and then the winds change with the upslope and roll them back to the right, all with a very vivid sky. Great work!

Have a wonderful day my dear friend Michael.

Thanks a lot Emily for your nice comment! It was actually not that much work sitting in the sun and letting the camera take its pictures...
  • Emily Eunjue Hayes 3 years ago
Thank you Michael for your kind explaing. Good that you didn't have to go through cold weather. Thank you for your right information so that way I know the truth.
: ) You are honest and I love you for it.

Great stuff Micheal. You have a deft hand with HDR, got the best out of it without going over the edge.

Nice video man. I love HDR photos. Did you have to manually make every single HDR photo in Photomatix, then import each photo to make the video? The way I do it would take 50 years to make this video. How did you do it?
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
Thanks Meat! I used the batch processing in photomatix, which applies the same tone mapping to a whole bunch of brackets! I will write a little tutorial soon...

    Totally magic look!
Did you take the shots and then scale them afterwards.
Before I red the discription I guessed it was shot on an EX1 but then the nice looking panning with the zoom was totally perfection so I guess it has to be done durring the cutting.
  • Michael Rissi plus 3 years ago
Yes, zooms and pans are in post!

Michael -- it makes my hands cold to even watch this.. - I also like the closing shot with the trees. And it reminds me that classical music can work very well with timelapse. How did you keep your batteries alive?
  • Michael Rissi plus 2 years ago
    Thanks Edvard!
That was actually not that terribly cold... The shots in here are between 30 minutes - 1 hour, and my batteries easily have power for several hours, even in cold conditions!
