On October 26th, a hole was blasted in the base of 125' tall Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in Washington. In less than 2 hours, the reservoir behind the dam drained completely and the White Salmon flowed unimpeded by a dam for the first time in 100 years.

This short clip is a combination of video and timelapse photography captured throughout the day. The technical stuff:

Video was shot with a Sony FS100, a Sony EX1 recording to a KiPro HDD recorder, and a Canon 5D.
The timelapse photography was done with 2 Canon Rebel T2is and a Canon 7D. Additional cameras used include GoPro Hero 2s, GoPro HD Heros and a Canon 1D Mark 4.

This video first appeared on the National Geographic News site here: bit.ly/uCeO9d
and is a part of my larger effort to document the restoration of the White Salmon River: bit.ly/ro6Pjh

Big thanks to my partner in this project, Steve Stampfli, for all of his ideas and effort.

Nice video. Too late but a cool shot would be to tether a couple Hero 2's on a float as the water level dropped. What were the helicopters used for?

Stay tuned! The 2 primary timelapse cameras will be shooting every daylight hour for the next few years. They'll start taking the dam down next summer!

Excellent video!!! That was really interesting to watch! What frame rate did you shoot in for the water bursting through the dam. Also, when the water drops; is that where you used the photography?
  • Andy Maser plus 3 months ago
Hey Jay--both of the explosion video angles were shot in 60p. Haven't used them in slow motion yet, but I'm sure they'll look incredible! Yes, all of the shots of water receding were done with timelapse photography.

Your footage is inspirational to me, and as I am currently in college trying to get a degree that somewhat correlates with my filming desires, I watch your videos often as I admire your skills! Great Bear is a personal favorite as it holds a lot of personal significance. The time lapse on this is super neat.
