As part of the Oral History project "Eyes for Talent: The Art and Science of Baseball Scouting," Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles Baseball Head Coach Vince Beringhele discussed the challenges young players face when deciding whether to play college baseball or sign a professional contract. Beringhele argues there are pros and cons to going with either a pro scout or a college recruiter.
Coach Beringhele has had a tremendously successful career coaching for UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and Cal State L.A. Prior to joining Cal State L.A. Coach Beringhele served as UCLA's hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator. Coach Beringhele worked with Garrett Atkins, Troy Glaus, Chase Utley, Eric Byrnes, Eric Valent, Ben Francisco, Michael Moore, Chris Pritchett, Joel Wolfe and Paul Ellis, all of whom were drafted in the first five rounds of the Major League Baseball draft.
