Wow, 11 minutes went by like nothing. It was so fascinating to watch you work and to see all the different processes involved. I think anyone who has ever maligned digital art should watch this and have their mouth shut for them. Incredible work, dude.

Excellence! And thanks for sharing. I'm stunned by how few layers you use. Could you lend some insight into the total number of hours shown here?

    Thanks!

You're more than welcome! Have a site? Maybe we can do some link exchange.
  • Michael Kendall 2 months ago
Absolutely, be happy to. I'm about to update my site which is at michaeloberhofer.com (oh no! My tricky net pseudonym is blown! :))
  • DEISIGN plus 2 months ago
Wow sir... that is an outstanding display of technique! I have to say I was specially blown away by your mastery rendering water! We all know that's a biggie. Fantastic!
  • Michael Kendall 2 months ago
Hehe, many thanks, it means a lot coming from you. My site only has my painting (hence the re-do), most of my recent work is digital, I'm lead illustrator for iBird, an iPad field guide, your drawing and texturing techniques have been a revelation, you'll probably see your influence in future works at what bird.com. Thanks again mate, hope to see more from you!

That was outrageous! I teach Photoshop and would kill to have a tutorial made of something like this. Amazing and inspirational at the least!
  • DEISIGN plus 2 months ago
Hi Jack! I've had a number of people request some sort of a tutorial or at least a "slower timelapse" of something like this, so I am considering doing that. If I end up doing it I'll be posting it at deisign.com and on it's FB Page as well over here: facebook.com/pages/DEISIGN/181941888952
Thanks again for stopping by and commenting.

This is completely incredible! I'm floored at your minimal use of layers in Photoshop. Your usage of color is amazing.

    Just posted this on showusyourclips.com

Hey, thanks for the post. I'm very glad you enjoyed the color in this piece. I'll have you know, I struggle with that aspect a lot. Adjusting Color Balance saves my ass every time ;)

i joined vimeo to watch videos like this! congrats man! one question though (stupid one!) How did you add texture to the blade for example? did you use shapes, mask orrr....?
  • DEISIGN plus 3 weeks ago
Thank you! Very glad to hear that.
As for your question, I placed the texture layer over the blade layer as a Clipping Mask on Overlay mode. What that does is block the same empty pixels from the layer bellow. You can do this with any layer by right clicking on it and selecting Create Clipping Mask.
