Last December while working on a film about the Solstice, I got wind of an unusual bunch of people who ride all night long on the darkest night of the year. I knew I had to meet them. Ride organizer Joe Platzner graciously allowed us to follow him and his riders though the night. It was a great adventure, and we met some amazing people. Two of them, Greg Cox and Andy Speier, later joined our filmmaking team on June 18 and made a big contribution to our successful event coverage, which we're currently editing into the film that will become beyondnakedfilm.com.

I cut this video to help promote their ride. Although I can’t imagine why they’d have any trouble finding anyone to join them, can you? If you’re up for the challenge, you can learn more at seattlerandonneur.org.

Beyond the fact that it looks like a compelling story, the audio is top notch... really refreshing :)

Glad you noticed Troye. I'm a big believer that great audio is more than half of what makes great film.

Randonneur here--best rando footage I've seen, and I second the audio comment. Very nice job. I actually got the feeling of a brevet from it.

    Keith,
We rented a gyro stabilizer for this shoot and it really paid off with smoothing the ride shots. I wish I'd had a few cameras like GoPros mounted on the bikes to make it even more intimate. But I'm glad it was real for you!

It sure did. I wondered how you got those.

I haven't tried to shoot a brevet, but even just riding with my kids, I find myself wishing for nine cameras...

If you can film kids, you can film anything.

I like it! I'm pretty new to Rando, and I need to show this to my SO.

Wow, a world class mini doc made in ultra challenging conditions. Bravo! Great conversation here - collaboration could be in the offing. Dan, have you looked at Warp Stabilizer (or similar rendering programs) that could open up the possibilities from GoPro type rigs?

Scott, I cut on Final Cut Pro X, which has a built-in stabilizer similar (but not quite as good as) Warp. I used both the gyro AND the software stabilization to get this looking as good as it did. GoPro footage can definitely look amazing. Have you seen the new video they did highlighting GoPro2? Dan,

What camera did you use to film this? Ditto the top-notch audio comment.
  •

Thanks Teofilo. I used two DSLRs, a Canon T2i and 60D.
