The cartoneros (Spanish for "cardboard people") of Buenos Aires, Argentina, roam the streets each night digging through the city's trash searching for the valuable recyclables they can sell to make a meager living. There are said to be some 8,000 cartoneros in the city, who emerged after Argentina's financial collapse in 2001, and some have over the years self organized into cooperatives. They are now starting to fight to become fully incorporated and recognized parts of the city government's waste collection system.
