"Mack Brown was born in Cookeville, Tennessee, and became head football coach at the University of Texas in December 1997. Brown, a graduate of Florida State, has spent more than 30 years coaching football. He has built top five programs at two different programs -- Texas and North Carolina -- and is considered a master at recruiting. In 10 seasons at North Carolina, Brown brought his team from a 1-10 record to a 10-1 record. At Texas, he's turned a team that suffered through five losing seasons into a contender for a national championship. Brown has taken his teams to 11 bowl games in a row. In five seasons under coach Brown, Texas has posted back-to-back 11-win seasons. He has been criticized for not winning a national championship in his five years at Texas. And he has also found himself in the spotlight with critics over his decision in 2001 to let Quarterback Chris Simms play rather than allowing Major Applewhite to start during his senior season. Brown addresses theses critics, the media and what it's like to coach at Texas in his interview with Evan Smith. As a boy Brown lettered in three sports, but chose to pursue football. After a brief stay at Vanderbilt, Brown went to Florida State where he lettered as a running back in 1971 and 1972." - Evan Smith, Texas Monthly Talks, Broadcast 5.22.03
