In 2010 I worked on a NIH-funded project with the Vet School at the University of Georgia. We were working as a team on creating a respiratory system, and I was in charge of cilia and phlegm. This is a video of the phlegm, from the top view and from the side view. (The cilia is not in this rendering.) This was a prototype using particles for the phlegm. It ended up taking way too much render time when we included the cilia, so this prototype didn't make it to the final project, but I still think it's some pretty awesome looking snot. Thanks to Jef Freydl for helping me figure out the particles, transparency, and shaders.
