On Saturday 7th February in the state of Victoria, Australia,
the temperature hit 46.4C (115.5F) in the city of Melbourne and a crazy 48C (118.4F) a little further out.

*48C temperatures
*Gale force winds over 100km's an hour (62miles per hour)
*The air as dry as a bone, humidity well under 10%
*We have been in a drought for the last decade so the earth was dry and ready to explode into an inferno if a fire started.
*Mass murders who started the fires

Add all of these together and it has become Australia's worst Brushfires.
Entire towns have been wiped off the map, with aerial images of the region showing an eerie moonscape of blackened earth and collapsed homes where fields and communities used to stand.

Towns have been declared crime scenes and the death toll in Victoria's bushfires has reached 210. Whole communities have been completely wiped out.

Over 2,000 homes have been destroyed, and more than 1,100,000 hectares have been burnt out.

All the Victorian bushfires are now contained (March 14 2009) 5 weeks from when it all started on February 7th 2009.

More than a million native animals may have perished in Victoria's fire inferno, a wildlife expert says.

A bushfire scientist has compared the intensity of the inferno to a nuclear strike. The energy released from the 'hell on earth' fires equates to 660 Hiroshima bombs!

Flames reached up to 80m (263feet) high!

Doctors treating Victorian bushfire burns victims say the disaster is worse than the Bali bombings.

I think it would be fair to say that the whole of Australia is in deep shock, and mourning over this tragic event.
I can't watch the news without the tears spilling over, just imagining the sheer terror and the overwhelming sadness as a result of all the terrible losses.
We (you guys) never stood a chance against a "monster" such as that, but I take my hat off to all that tried SO hard to fight those fires.
Those firefighters are angels in disguise!

It is my sincerest hope that as a result of this changes will be made.
The penalty for those caught lighting fires MUST change.
It is a form of terrorism!
I also hope somehow, we learn something from this in the hopes of never ever again seeing so much loss of human life.

For those who have survived and lost friends and loved ones, my heart goes out to them in deepest sympathy.

    Wow.
I thought we had it rough here in California last fall. I made this just before there were 1900+ fires in Northern CA.
    vimeo.com/1217285
Santa Anna winds make So. Cal. impossible for fire prevention. Every year it seems worse, but nothing compared to your fire season.
We never see so many fatalities.
Your video really says it all. The end stills are astounding.

Thanks for the post. Who did the music?

    Mate !
I'm soo pleased you did this.
What a truly Great job you have done on it.
I thought only last night of doing something like it but as I watch the late news I knew I couldn't.
To watch your video that you have put together so well brings more tears and sadness to me at this tragedy.
At this very moment as I sit here in my office in Qld typing this it is absolutely pouring with rain.... Why isn't it raining down there for those POOR homeless and shattered people.

I think that if the law catches up with the fucking arse holes that started this they should be thrown straight into jail for the rest of their lives never to be released and keep them in total insolation from anyone till the day the Bustards die!... and even thats too good for them!!!

To all those who are suffering from love ones that have been lost in this trouble tragedy my Heart and soul is with you and my DEEPEST, DEEPEST Sympathy. You are in the hearts and minds of all Australia and others all around the world. XO
Thank You soo much Munchkin, Well do Mate.

Its hard to click the 'like' button on something so tragic but I've been really touched by what has happened in Victoria this week. I think it would be great if you posted links to the red cross, salvation army donation links on your page.

I am sending positive thoughts and prayers to all fellow Australians, especially those impacted by the fires. It is indeed the saddest tragedy ever to occur in our bushfire history. And you did a great job capturing the horror of it all here, Munchkin, and reminding us all that we are part of something bigger.

    Deeply moving...

The Koala drinking out of the bottle (at the end) is an amazing sight to see. It really shows the trust between wild animals and people when something like this happens.

This video was hard to take in but I am glad I viewed it. My prayers are with the ones who lost someone in this horrible event. I cannot imagine what the people were going through when they were fleeing for their lives just to be consumed by the fire. Fire is by far the worst way to die as the body has no way to block out the pain.

This was truly a tragic event for Australia. I just can't see why someone would set a fire like this, I can't even comprehend such an act.

Thank you for sharing this and I agree with Keith about the links.

that scene with the koala is, for me, the most powerful image. I never think that a koala trust on we to survive. But in this kind of situation everything is possible.
    Shocking video.

Thanks for uploading this. I hope they catch the monster who did this!

I am from Melbourne. It is times like this that restore your faith in human nature. The outpouring of help from all over Aus and NZ has been tremendous.

And I totally agree with Tracey. Anyone caught lighting fires needs a much harsher sentence.

    Amazing vid Munchkin.

I was haunted by the images and the music... it's still resonating.

  • Frightening and tragic, my heart goes out to all those caught in this awful disastrous situation, and to the 128 (so far) who have lost their lives. I understand from the news that many of these fires are the result of arson – what mindless morons, if caught they should be locked up for life!
The many who risked their lives to help stop these fires should be honoured greatly; heroic bravery has been shown by many.

I truly hope normality returns soon, and those that have lost their loved ones & homes are given the help & compensation so much needed.

My heart goes out for those who lost there loved ones, and for those who still struggle and fight against the fire! We get informed here in Holland and Belgium every day. Today we've heard that there are over 200 people killed by the fire. I surely hope they get the sun of**##@@...... who did this. What in the hell is someone thinking when he/she is lighting this?

But this video is really great! specially the pictures at the end. They have to use this video for rasing money!!!

Absolutely horrific! Here in Southern California, we are no stranger to wildfires that devastate communities. Yet nothing ever prepares you for the devastation and loss they bring.

I feel very sad to the knowledge that not resources in order that it rescue the lives that were lost ... I really wanted to have this power!

The humanity moans while there are heard clearly the outcries of these desperate lives. But it is important to remember that before all that was happening, The nature was already dying in destruction. " The flames of the deforestation ", of the exploraçãoi without limits of the natural recrsos. The self-destruction of the humanity and in consequence, the planet.

    An irreparable damage. :(

I can't bring myself to click the 'like' button - I dislike what these monsters have done - so much so I dreaded watching this video.

I hope that you, your husband, family and friends are kept safe from this event and that all Aussies muck in and catch and punish the ones responsible!

    be well....

My daughter Nicole is about 70 kilometers from where all this is happening and her friends are on a farm that had to be evacuated. As they drove out they came to a part where the road was blocked by fire and fallen tress and had to turn around and go out TOWARDS the oncoming fire. At one stage they thought that they would not make it.....very luckily they did. There are countless stories to be told and this document goes a long way to helping people who have no knowledge of bushfire to get a little bit of an understanding of the magnitude of this disaster. We need all that pray to pray....we need all that can contribute to do so. This will soon be 'old news'......but the effects will go on for years and years. Some folks will never ever forget those days in hell.
I thank you for putting this together.....I can now send the link to people overseas who may wish to help in some way. It makes me cry.

    Annie,
Not much to say as your video says it all. Here in California we are getting a fair share of video on this as we can clearly relate to tragic fires like this one. One image that blew me away was an Aussie firefighter amidst some smoking, charred trees, his face streaked with ash, giving water from a plastic bottle to a frightened looking Koala bear. Better days are ahead.

This video should be shared with all our contacts here on Vimeo and to our family and friends around the world.

This is no ordinary Bushfire, this is as your title says:
    'Hell on Earth' !!!

I've been watching the news and the human stories are so touching that I tear up every time I hear them.

Mothers losing little children as they watch them being burnt in the house, many others crashing their cars as they tried to outrun the huge fire ball, they crash as the smoke was so dark that they couldn't see pass the bonnet of the car.
Charred corpses scattered everywhere, it was as if an atomic bomb had gone off.

Whole towns wiped off the face of the earth !

So sad, so very sad indeed. Words don't do it justice.

I totally agree....lets all get this out there as far as it can go. Hopefully the information about donations locally and also for overseas will generate some much needed help for the Red Cross to distribute to the people who have gone through this nightmare. The people on the 'front line' NEED our prayers, our good wishes and donations.....it is all we have to let them know that we are thinking of them.
    Lets use this Internet thing......

It is tragedy to all of us. It is painful for me to watch what had happened in Victoria, Austrailia. I am sending my best heart to all those who lost their loved one's in this world. Tragic is part of our life, have a no choice but deal with the moment. It is also warning for us all to be cautious with the fire. It maybe natural but either way it is painful story to us all. We are the people in this world to share good news and bad news. To be truth to the moment and to feel other's sorrow's like mine. Ouch, and Ouch.
I hope the best with all of you and thank you for being our real public eyes my dear friend Munchken.

Sincerely from my heart. emily eunjue hayes
