Nice work. C300 looks great but hardly a 5D 2 successor with a price tag upward of $20k!
  • Blake Whitman staff 3 months ago
yeah, we we're hoping it would be a little more affordable. But prices always change.

I don't think it's meant to be affordable. ANd here's my thoughts on why I say this. They don't want 5dmk2 sales volume on this. Or even what a 5dmk3 would seel in terms of volume. I say this because they will come out with a stronger version once they really develop their processors and possibly a new codec that can run with these processors. This is the DV digicIII chips. wait until canon video upgrades their processors. I feel they really don't want a big production line with this the C300 as they have for the 5dmk2, YET! Keep in mind this is Canon's "video" sides first entry into the s35 frame. Pretty impressive to me in image quality and ERGONOMICS! I love it's look! It's tiny! But it will have a very short shelf life because better is coming, and probably sooner than we think it will. Chill people! You're $8000-$12,000 Canon cinema monster is coming. This is for "Broadcast Hollywood" and films here and there for B cam or special shots. But it's meant for televised Hollywood, not for the masses to film their friends at the beach. In Hollywood, they will gladly pay $20,000 (if that is in fact the final list), then happily throw them away when finished because they have the budgets for that. Most of us don't, and Canon knows that and is currently working on that camera for you. One that you will be extremely please with. Isn't the headline from Canon on this day The Story "Bigins". Begins, that to me translates as the fist step.

Im not sure why everyone keeps commenting on the associated price tag. This is a cinematic rig. I dont see people complaining about how much a Red Epic costs and we're not all pretending we're about to run out and buy one of those either!

As the famous proverb states "You gotta pay to play". Its obviously a serious camera for professionals with a studio (or similar) budget.

Nonetheless, great BTS video, you're one lucky guy!

Great BTS Shoot Blake, it explains a lot and it truly helps visualize the production process.

We have to see it from a Hollywood budget POV. This is as cheap as it gets. Now the shoestring budget minded film maker has to rely in DSLRs and FS100 AF100s.

The Image is incredibly detailed and organic, I can't wait to see how a 5D Mk III will look.
  • Blake Whitman staff 3 months ago
this was not a small budget film :)

I meant cheap camera for what the competition offers. The Production looked as good as any big budget shoot on TV and in the theater.

Way to cover the event Blake! Nice work.

Unfortunately… RED stole the show yesterday.
  • David Abades 3 months ago
    what did RED do?
  • Michael Cameneti plus 3 months ago
They announced the Scarlet-X that can shoot Video: 4k @ 30fps, 3k @ 48fps, 2k @ 60fps, 1k @ 120fps (the c300 is capable of overcrank but caps off at 60fps/720p) and all at half the price of the c300 body.

There seems to be pros and cons to both cameras, honestly. If RED can actually ship the Scarlet-X beginning of next year… It seems to be a more versatile camera. But obviously… that all depends on the film maker and his/her needs.

Would I take a c300? Of course!!! I'd also love to have a personal camera like the RED EPIC, 5D MKII, 7D, GH2 etc. but they are expensive for someone like myself who can't truly justify a huge purchase like that just yet. (I currently use the 5D MKII/7D/60D because I work at a video production company and they are always at my disposal).

The c300 looks great… but I believe the Scarlet-X looks a bit more appealing to an indi film maker based on specs/price.

    Just my opinion. :)
  • Mike Isler 3 months ago
Specs perhaps, but not price. I think you'll find that once you've priced out a functional Scarlet package, it'll be about equal to the street price of this C300. Also, the post requirements are much simpler when working in MXF as opposed to REDCODE.

Nice filming, liked the quadcopter idea, very neat

What was the helicopter used to fly the DSLR?
Yep, the Red Scarlet seems like much better bang for the buck than the C300...if the C300 were released a year earlier, it would be more competitive...

EOS 300C is not a deal breaker.

As the price tag and most of the features RED already hit the market. The near released Red Scarlet X has 4K recording and over 120fps recording capabilities for $10,000 price tag.

Even Sony NEX5N Compact camera has 1080p/60p recording fasilities with better dynamic range read by the processor. also FS100, F100 doing the better job in low price tag.

And Canon 1080p has not 60p recording in this EOS 300C. Thats a joke. Digic DV III processor cant handle the 1080p/60p yet. LOL but the price is above 20,000US$ Thats a serious joke that canon ever have done.

Only the one best thing i can see from the 300C is Incredible Low light Performance. I hope that cant beat no one. because ISO 20,000 in EOS300C is looks like ISO 3200 in normal APSC DSLR. Thats fantastic.

But still Red Epic, Scarlet X, Rocks with more features than this and lower price tag with Greater Image.

    And one thing. canon announced new Cine primes (24mm T1.5, 50mm T1.3 and 85mm T1.3 ) and two Cine zooms (CN-E14.5-60mm T2.6L and CN-E30-300 T2.95-3.7L).

Thats only the worth announcement last day. Not the EOS 300C
  • Matthew Allard plus 3 months ago
First of all a working Scarlett will cost you closer to 15-16k. The Canon cine primes will be 6-7k each and the zooms are 45-47k each! If your winging about the price of the camera then saying the lenses were the only worth while announcement seems contradictory.

It amazes me how everyone complains about every camera that ever comes out. There is no such thing as the perfect camera. People should embrace the new technology and stop complaining.
