This little video was shot at Powder Mountain, a ski area in northern Utah. Pow mow flies below the radar as far as utah resorts are concerned, which is fine by me! This place is all about getting your pow turn on with your buddies, all day.

Shot on a 5DmkII, handheld, with a 15mm fisheye. Tried to capture the feeling of shredding a resort on a typical utah pow day.

Music is Jungle Lion by Lee "Scratch" Perry

now how is it that you weren't worried about the camera with all that snow around?

We've added this to the 5D wiki at planet5d.com We've got more 5D reviews/still/video samples than anywhere else on the planet.

As my only experiences of boarding mostly left me horizontal with a view of the sky or a mouthful of snow I view your footage with utter amazement.

I am not young or cool enough to use such terms but it seems appropriate in this case. Respect!

Even for a fisheye it looks remarkably smooth, did you have anything to support or protect the camera?
  • Ian Provo plus 9 months ago
    Respect!

the camera is in a nylon bag, sometimes the lens gets blasted with snow though.
  •
  • Andrew Howe plus 9 months ago
    So I noticed.

Made me feel a bit foolish about panicking over the odd bit traditional British sleet hitting the camera last weekend :)

Nice!! There's more snow heading out that way. Were you using any stabilizers or just handheld?

Sad Texas guy here. Never even been skiing.. much less something like this. Loved watching it though.

5D2 is a killer tool...that is for sure.

what i am curious about is how you held it while boarding - did you hold the lens directly/ the body/ or a strap or some sort of grip? please share...this rocks!!!!!

Totally, utterly ridiculous. Quality of content and imagery is suuuuu-perb. I haven't had the nerve to try the POV thing with my D90 yet. I'm inspired to try it now. Although I'm guessing that the shutter wobble is going to piss me off.

Powder Mountain is horrible! HORRIBLE! Tell all your friends! Tell everyone you know. DO NOT COME TO UTAH TO GO TO POWDER MOUNTAIN! I cannot emphasize this strongly enough.

    Do. Not. Come.

    That is all.

i hope you're only saying that so that nobody will pack the mountain. Powder Mountain is hands down one of Utah's best kept secrets for riding.

    Music: Lee Perry "Jungle Lion"

Sounds a lot like Al Green, "Love and Happiness." Althought, Al Green might have gotten his hit from Perry.

what gyro are you using? must be compact because the camera's reflection in the goggles looks on the small side. and to hold it out that long... do you have a small bar attached to your forearm?
well, maybe it's a professional secret.

awesome artistry with this video btw... keeps drawing me back.
  • Scott Wessen 9 months ago
I had the exact same question.
  • Ian Provo plus 9 months ago
no gyro used. you should see my arms though, im like the incredible hulk. Seriously though, its not that hard to hold it up.

I keep watching this over and over trying to figure out what you have the camera mounted on? It is as if you are being pulled by something or that you have a brace of some sort that the camera is mounted on with a ski on the bottom. The left side of the skiers bodies are hardly even moving. Maybe it is just the effect of the IS and the wide angle. Either way nice work.
  • Ian Provo plus 9 months ago
im glad you find it intriguing. Its a very simple concept though. 2 riders coming down the fall line while holding a camera. The camera is in a nylon bag to shed snow and it is mounted on a modified handheld monopod.

    Thanks!

Apply defish to the video. The 15mm fisheye is pretty boring for video because the corners don't move, but after defishing you should get lots of motion in the corners.

Ian what kind of lens are you using ... I see almost no Falloff on the sides ... also settingswise ... since the whites are so pronounced ... do you lock the exposure before starting to film ... its awsamo but still there seems to be some ghosting ... hows the handling of this in practical conditions ? handy or techguy style :P

PS: Right now I want some POW POW :)

oooh... nice pow riding... Btw Ian or anybody else can you write to me pls, that is your binding in real middle of the your Armada JJ ski or not? In the middle of skis is better for switch and tricks, but I want to have this skis mostly for classical riding. Its possible to mount binding on this ski behind the middle (nearer to tail) or because of reverse sidecut its a bad choice? thanks...btw sorry for my english i am from Slovakia:)
  • Ian Provo plus 9 months ago
I have my skis mounted near the center, but they are supposed to be mounted further back. You will enjoy these skis!

great job. best part was the last little bit, no music. just hearing it, seeing it, feeling it.

Surprisingly steady for holding it with your hand and pointing it at yourself. The fisheye helps a little too.

i was at Solitude on tuesday. Epic! I also hit a stump and punched a one inch hole in my shin. A bloody mess, but after 4 stitches, 40 mins and $20 later back out turning it up.

i need to hit up powder m.
