An editing experiment.

Trying to turn an abstract, serious film into its complete opposite: a comedy. I edited footage of '2001: a Space Odyssey' onto the audio from the trailer of 'Meet Dave' and this is the result.

I just wrote a paper on this movie for my Communication Theories class, never thought of it in a comedic sense before. I think I'd see it if Eddie Murphy were in it.

i think i subscribe to the old adage..when in doubt..leave it the f**** alone...

Hi Robert, I see you're new here. So you may not know yet, but at Vimeo we subscribe to the old adage, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

If you don't like a video, just move on.

Meh. There are plenty of better examples of this kind of thing on the internet. "The Shining" as a sitcom is a great one.
  • Jesse Manschot 7 months ago
Yeah, this is just an experiment and a first try too. I've seen that Shining Trailer, it was extremely well done.

    That was great!

Pay no attention to those negative comments. I love how people who leave rude comments on vimeo and youtube never upload any videos of there own.

Kubrick himself would find this amusing.
  • Jesse Manschot 7 months ago
As long as they're is constructive criticism or an explanation in them, I won't complain. I might even learn from it! :)
  •
  • robert chewter 7 months ago
i have uploaded videos. i am entitled to an opinion, rude? no..point being..instead of originality we have to , mess around and tinker and ultimately devalue any thing of value..not so long ago a commercial company ,messed about with gene kellys singing in the rain.making it look hiphop trendy .it was a nightmare and dreadful..but thats america for you..no new ideas..lets remake this and that..kubricks dead. shame.

Ahhhh, this was going so well, but where's the ending?
  • Jesse Manschot 7 months ago
I cut out big parts of the audio because it didn't really fit with the rest or it just wasn't possible to get the right footage with it. Resulting me having to cut out the ending.

btw, I see you're a Moebius fan too?
  • theartist plus 7 months ago
Oh yeah, first got into Moebius when he was illustrating for the heavy Metal magazine. Have you seen his site? He's currently building it, with any luck, someday it will have some cool stuff!!! Cheers, keep up the great work!
  • Jesse Manschot 7 months ago
My dad has a whole collection of him and that's how I got into him, I have seen his site recently and I saw he was building it yes. I'm curious of what its content will be! :)

Did you edit the timing on the lip-sync because in most cases it worked well. Well you have been an inspiration I might try one of these.
  • Jesse Manschot 7 months ago
Yes, I did edit it lip-sync most of the time. Glad you've found your inspiration, I'll look forward to it!

  • Patrick McEnaney 7 months ago
Who did the "movie guy" voice for you?
  • Jesse Manschot 7 months ago
It was part of the audio from the trailer of Meet Dave. The voice, music and soundeffects were already there because I just ripped it from the original Meet Dave trailer, I just had to edit the footage from 2001: A Space Odyssey on top of it.

This was so good. The way you spliced the audio for that "do you read me hal?" bit was sooo well done. I cannot believe you actually just used the real 'film trailer guy' voiceover. This film has been spoofed to death but this is easily the funniest.

yes i have issues.my patents died a few years ago but i like to think i live in democracy where people are entitled free speech and opinion even if it doesnt fit the acceptable l 'lets all devalue everythng and turn it all into a laugh' attitude...im for a bit of artistc fun..but does every old cinema have to be knocked down and turned into a hamburger joint with out anyone wondering what the point of that is...

i just fed up of remake itis..leaving no room for orginality.. but then i do live in the UK thats how we think here.

Good idea. BUT, with a little more thought it could've been funny. Develop more of a storyline trailer.
Good pieces. Tie them together and add the connections.
  •
  • Phillip Lopez plus 7 months ago
I agree... you cheapened your idea by trying to sync their lips to other dialogue. I would try analyzing more to find the actual dialogue from the film to meet your story line. Decent though.

It was hilarious in the big picture, and that's the point of it. Each individual clip of editing over voices wasn't funny, but it was the whole point of it that was funny and made me laugh out loud. Good job

The incongruity of 2001 and Dave makes the trailer formula suddenly very obvious: the hip hop beat at the end with the comedy scream, for example. How many dozens of times have you heard that?

Very enjoyable. A welcome addition to the trailer mashup genre. It's a shame there aren't more trailer mashups.
  •
  • Vonorn 7 months ago
Yes the HoleyWould studio formula is sadly evident, when one can edit a master piece and transform it to a pre masterbation age laughathon.
Im sure we will be seeing "2001 inches" A Bootycall odeseyyyy booeeeyyyyy, movie soon enough. But hey its all about innerstainment fer the brain.
Beautifully edited and Mashed and dashed to perfection

As an artist astronomer my entire life, I enjoyed it. 2001 is still my favorite movie with La Dolce Vita as a close second. I can see where many here deplore the sampling, plagarism, hack film world of borowing others work. Life imitates art. Then we upload our own? Is that the rule of the day here? I have acted and worked on Hollywood film sets, created much in awarded and published art - markseibold.com or myspace.com/marksolarprophet and allowed thousands of the public to participate across the nation while on a 10,000 mile solo road trip; then overseas for three trips to the south Pacific to venture in the same teaching mode for the public and schools.

I have to admit I laughed at this Meet Dave effort of good editing but can these guys reproduce a close comparison to Kubrick's original? Can you say Academy Awards?

I like the mocked and edited merge in Youtube of Barbarella and 2001 with Julie London singing Fly me to the moon. -Mark
(see myspace.com/marksolarprophet where my good friend John Broxton has made great efforts to assemble 240 hand spliced edits and all dubbed sound from original interviews of three local actors in 8mm Living
    B & W - Trinidad )
