Sponsored by The Pulse magazine, The Progressive Student Coalition (PSC) and "We Are Ohio", Live Against 2 was a powerful rally at the Ohio Union to get out the student vote against Issue 2, which will repeal Senate Bill 5 if the majority of Ohioans vote “NO”. SB5, the first major rewrite of Ohio collective-bargaining law in 28 years, would, among numerous other things, prohibit strikes by all public employees, limit the topics for negotiation, require workers to pay at least 15 percent of their medical-insurance premiums, and forbid local governments from picking up any portion of an employee’s share of pension contributions.
Senate Bill 5’s direct attack on more than 350,000 public employees, including university employees, teachers, police, and firefighters, has infuriated many Ohioans. If Issue 2 passes, teachers won’t be able to bargain on how many students are in their classes (could you imagine a 50:1 student-teacher ratio?), firefighters and policemen will have a harder time obtaining up-to-date equipment, and public hospitals, including OSU’s, could be understaffed. This isn’t balancing the budget and it isn’t creating jobs. We as students are standing together because we all believe a strong working and middle class are vital to a strong society.
