Location: prisoner 's cell at Old Police Station, New Cross, London
“What happens when all of your human rights are taken away?”
“Play it again and again, Sam” .
‘I could hear people knocking their heads against the walls and the doors, screaming their heads off’ -Binyam Mohamed, the British resident returned from Guantánamo to the U.K-
Using the video as medium I imagined, filmed and re-enacted Government’s Intelligence Agencies perpetrated torture versus prisoners. -The viewer must see the video from the cell peepholes and must use the provided remote control to play it- I thought the viewer could directly witness the violence and pain inflicted to the prisoner by the loudness of music. The sound torture although it doesn’t leave physical signs it still inflicts permanent psychological damages. At the same time I am instigating the viewer to a sort of partaking.
Playing it again and again will make you participant in the torture. Sam (Uncle Sam) represents The imperialistic Government (not the people but for sure all those supporting the imperialistic politics). You: ‘for as long as you play it as long you are Sam’.
The work, within the Hysterical Women exhibition call ‘Walls of Authority’, is inspired and aims to raise awareness independently about Zero db campaign to stop the use of music as psychological torture.
