Short film made for the project "Imagem do Som do Samba" (Image of the Sound of Samba).

Praça Onze (Square 11) was the place where all the Samba Schools performed on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the begining of the XX Century. The lyric tells about the day the square was reformed, to give space to an big avenue, and the samba was silenced.

A free translation of an excerpt:

"They will end with Eleven Square
There will be no more school of samba
The whole hill is crying
Favela, Salgueiro
Mangueira, First Station,
Put down your tambourines
because the school of samba won't go out"

Captured with a camera rig containing 10 Sony FX1 and 1 High Speed Camera.

Backgrounds made with camera map on Electric Image.

Soundtrack:
"Praça Onze" (1942) Grande Otelo e Herivelto Martins
Clean cover version of song by AD Studio

Hey man, sory if by asking the following question I may seem unpolite but, Could you explain in detail how all this was done? I would specially like to know things like: How did you create or do the shots from down below the actors? and how did you create the frame movement as in old movies? (By this I dont mean the grains and all the scratch and dirt in the image, but the movment or frame line that comes and goes in the shot at the bottom of the frame). If all this is too much to explain here, you could respond at hachehache@gmail.com ... thanks and sorry for all these questions.

    Hey Hache.

Don't be sorry. Everybody has questions (I certainly have) and here is a goog place to ask.

We've made a rig with several cameras in an arc, and the dancers were performing over a big glass (see photos). Part of the arc were bellow the glass, with cameras looking up. To do the passages on the video, we used frames of each camera, in a sequence.

I have a collection of film grain footage of all sorts that I apply as layers. But the movement of the frame (frame jitter) can be achieved with an After Effects Plug-ins, Digieffects Aged Film (good for grains and hairs too).

Don't be afraid to ask more.

Uau! What a Brazilian celebration! Samba video in its best! Absolutely!
Jarbas you combined techniques perfectly, they produce together a breathtaking visual effect. The samba flow of circular loops being captured by the sequence cameras placed in an arc is a genius solution, it naturally embraces the circular movements of dancers during  samba choreography. The performers over glass is the finest touch, it snatches the audience by surprise from old footage to a slow graceful display of samba in high definition, image rich in shape, form and colors. I also appreciate the attention to music, contrasting the record scratch sound effects like of a vinyl record or old radio broadcast to high quality surround sound effects.
You have a incredible taste, and I quote Michael Phelps, “I'm at a Loss For Words!”

Video Lindo, lindo, lindo! infinitamente! Me fez sim matar a saudade das vinhetas da Globeleza de Hans Donner onde cameras e efeitos especiais respeitavam as giradas graciosas das pasistas valorizando o movimento e a forma natural do Samba.

Jarbis - You did such a great job ageing this footage... without seeing the souped up versions I wouldn't have believed it. KL.

Thanks Keith! I definitely have a passion for grains and scratches. Blame it on the Super 8 from my childhood.
